Elatsoe ends with a very antisemitic trope and I never believed that the author realized that it was an antisemitic trope so I was okay with recommending it. But after October 7th antisemitism has risen so much--and I still believe that the author didn't realize that it was an antisemitic trope--but I don't want to recommend that book anymore.

Sheine Lende: A Prequel to Elatsoe by @dr.littlebadger
Before Elatsoe, there was Shane. Shane and her mother work with ghost dogs to track missing persons—whether families can pay or not. After losing their home to a devastating flood, and much of their family with it, they know what it means to search for the impossible.
Then the unthinkable happens: her mother disappears. A fairy ring. A missing boy. And a trail that may not exist in this world—or this time. What follows is a journey through grief, displacement, family secrets, and fierce determination. This prequel expands the world readers first met in Elatsoe and centers Ellie’s grandmother in a story that is haunting, grounded, and unforgettable.
If you love speculative fiction rooted in Indigenous storytelling, layered family legacy, and supernatural mystery—press play.

Someone recommended The House in the Cerulean Sea to me today and i looked it up and what the heck?? Apparently it's based on the sixties scoop except the author decided to make the native kids monsters and it's from the point of view of the caseworker who's job it is to separate kids?? and he ends up with the guy who runs an orphanage and they and the kids all live happily ever after because i guess it's sometimes ok to separate kids from their culture and families because yay found family???
Anyway if you want a cute fantasy book by an asexual author i recommend Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger...

books & bookmarks
new Type Of Post from me: pairing a few of my bookmarks with some of my favourite books! based on both contents and the cover art. all will be under my bookmarks tag.
The Scapegracers - teen witches, rituals, & inky sentient demon books
House of Hollow - bugs, strange flowers, knives, & dead things
Don't Let The Forest In - fairytales, horror stories, & forest rot
Elatsoe - ghost dogs & ghost bugs, vampires, & fairy rings
if you like fantasy fiction, elatsoe has an ace apache teenager with ghost powers investigating her cousin's death - highly recommend!
I do, and I really liked Elatsoe! I’m extremely hit-or-miss with YA but Elatsoe was really good, and made me wish that this was the kind of YA I had when I was a teen. I haven’t yet read the prequel, or Little Badger’s other book A Snake Falls To Earth, but they are for sure on my eternal TBR list!
