Mr Shamsi "My servant" (1979) by Rabbi Zalman Kolko, Long Island, NY. "The Yeshiva Toras Chaim of the South Shore marked its 25th anniversary week and the third anniversary of the arrival at the yeshiva of a teacher's assistant named Mr. Shamsi. The assistant showed no emotion and made no comments about the anniversary, which is understandable because Mr. Shamsi is a robot. Rabbi Benjamin Kamenetzky, the dean, believes it is the only robot used as an educational aid in a school on Long Island. Mr. Shamsi - which means ''my servant'' in Hebrew - was constructed by Rabbi Zalman Kolko, who has a background in engineering and teaches English and Hebrew subjects at the yeshiva, in Hewlett. The robot is 5 feet high and, therefore, taller than most of the students. It is kept in a closet in Rabbi Kolko's classroom and brought out to help in instruction. It is programmed to ask questions of the pupils in the courses they are studying and also programmed to respond to their answers. "If the robot is given the correct answer, it lights up and its nose flashes," Rabbi Kamenetzky said. If the answer is wrong, it shows no reaction." – Long Island Journal (April 11, 1982).
