Today at lunch, EdTA Board President Frank Pruet presented the President’s Award to Gai Jones.
The President’s Award is presented to an individual who has made exceptional contributions to the Association, EdTA President, board of directors, or volunteer leadership of EdTA.
Jones is from Ojai, California. She has been a theatre educator and director at the high school and college levels since 1964, including thirty-four years at El Dorado High School, Placentia, California, where she directed the Thespian troupe. She has just completed a term on the EdTA board, and is a former California chapter director. She is the author of Raising the Curtain: Activities for the Theatre Arts Classroom.
“I knew in the fifth grade that I wanted to teach theatre and that’s what I did,” Jones said when she accepted the award. “And for all of you out there -- you are my heroes.”
Jones continued, “Yes, I do have a theatre named after me and the biggest compliment I ever got was at a Thespian convention when a kid said, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re the theatre.’”
EdTA members elect board members and approve changes in the Code of Regulations
Members of the Educational Theatre Association elected a new vice president/president and two board members in results announced at the annual meeting held Friday, September 16 at the EdTA National Conference. They also approved three terminology clarifications in the Code of Regulations: one regarding ex officio members as voting members of committees, one regarding the composition of the nominating committee, and one regarding the definitions of secretary and treasurer.
