History:

In 1919, a medical officer during World War I, Frederick Keillor, bought the large piece of land now known as Keillor Point. Many buildings, including a log house and barn were built on the property, and plenty of animals lived on the farm with the resident manager. Dr. Keillor worked for the city, serving as a coroner and an alderman for two terms.

Later, in 1928, Dr. Keillor asked the city for a road to be built and donated part of his land in order to give better entry to his farm and Whitemud Park. After he’d passed, the city bought the land, yet it wasn’t until 1974, three years after his death, that the city had decided to name the road after him in memory and respect of his contributions. However, due to the road’s continuous need for repairs to secure the pillars and foundation, and the high cost of this maintenance, the road was officially closed in 1995.

In 2002, only a few years after its closure, a landslide wiped out Keillor Road, leaving just the crumbling small platform and pillars. People became obsessed with the place, and gave it the nickname “The End of the World”, which has stuck ever since. However, no one was actually allowed on the property due to the lack of safety. There were trespassing signs, warning signs, and fines. Still, teenagers hung out and partied there, and people snuck in to take pictures and admire the view.

The growing concerns and complaints of safety, litter, and noise from nearby residences and the community gained the attention of the Belgravia Community League. To resolve these issues, they asked the city about renovating the site, and, with some debate, the city decided to go through with the renovations, starting in 2015. By 2019 the renovations were complete, and the park was officially open to the public as “Keillor Point” as a way of reflecting the history of the site.
