Every writer knows that one damned sentence.

You write it. You delete it. You rewrite it. You stare at it for ten minutes. You delete and write it again.

It’s either never good enough or just doesn't help on the flow of the paragraph.

So you end up trapped in an endless loop of : this is genius,it fits so well" > "No actually this is garbage, I am a failure " > "maybe it’s fine?" until you give up and convince yourself to move on telling yourself that you will fix it later…

I used to think I was fairly good with commas, until I realized that my use of commas has more to do with inflections than grammar, and now I'm wondering if I use them wrong half the time.

Okay I try not to be a dick about orthography when I'm not getting paid to be, but I am begging people to stop spelling it "segway". The word you are almost certainly looking for, which means "a smooth transition between two ideas, topics, or parts of something", is segue, which is indeed pronounced "segway" but is not spelled like that.

Because "Segway" spelled as such is a deliberate misspelling of "segue" that is the trademarked name of a kind of electric scooter device. So every time you mean "segue" in your fic but write "segway", I am blindsided by a momentary image of your character whizzing through the scene on one of these fucking things:

which is really unfortunate when it happens in a high-tension drama scene or, worse, a sex scene.

(Honestly though, the reason this one misspelling annoys me so much isn't just the mental images. It's the corporate overreach of managing to literally replace a real word in people's brains with a fucking trademark brand name. Every time someone misspells that word they're advertising Segway Inc for free and honestly that's messed up.)

I would like to report that apparently ignoring the book for two months before coming back to edit is a good thing actually. Can't even begin to explain how much clunk, redundancy, and just plain poor writing I've managed to find and fix up. I've always said I'm proud of my work after finishing a draft, but this time? I think I'm finally ready to release it into the wild.

I mean after one more pass to make sure I didn't screw it all up with these changes.
