Hi I have 3 percent battery left and a lot of anger at the season 3 finale of Downton Abbey (yes I am 9 years late to the party and like 5 years late to tumblr. I can and will shout in the void anyway)
That being said, I’m putting down a list of my (maybe) controversial opinions.
-I dont like Lady Mary. Her bored and dismissive attitude is supposed to come off as “witty” and “complex” but it doesn’t. She’s just mean and unlike her sisters, she never has to work or to give anything away to get what she wants, which makes her seem spoiled and plain awful. The show is really trying to push her as the “main character” but she’s just so unlikeable. She didn’t deserve Matthew.
-The show often has characters act unlike themselves because they need dramatic tension, which is very annoying.
- Violet Grantham gets so much cooler in season 2 and 3 and I am here for it.
-💗💖💗costume design💞💓💖
-The show is also so dependant on dialogue, it’s a shame they don’t use more cinematic methods. They don’t give the viewer the credit of *understanding* what the characters are feeling without it being spelled out. Eg. Matthew and Marys realisation that they should marry would have been so much stronger if they came to realise it themselves than if every single character told them to their face.
- The bickering between Mary and Edith is so unbalanced it just seems like bullying. While Mary gets everything without much trouble, Edith has to struggle and constanty suffer without any reward. You could argue that’s real life too, but if this show goes such a long way to make the most dramatic and plot-convenient narrative happen, I really dont buy that they’re trying to display Real LifeTM without any moralistic undertones. They just punish Edith for not liking Prom Queen Mary.
-I love when characters see something that we consider ordinary today and go “what is this new technology??? I shall not touch this devilish device, the….the *toast maker*”. Comedy gold.
- I kinda expected them to get rid of Thomas, but if he’s gonna have a character arc FINALLY and stop being a naughty little angsty asshole, I am also here for it.
- I like that it tries to consider the political and social changes and debates of the period. Im not educated if they cover them justly, but they surely sell it as so.
-That being said i think the show surprises with it’s salad mix of political opinions. Sometimes the characters have very “time-appropriate” opinions so to say, sometimes they’re surprisingly progressive. Of course, any sort of morale or message should shift to fit the most plot-convenient line of action anyway, according to this show.
- I am curious what they’re gonna do next season, since they tied the knot on the main plot of the last 3 seasons. (Matthew and Mary saving the Estate lineage) I guess it makes sense. But at the same time I’m still so heartbroken they killed off 2 of the best characters.
That’s it I mainly came to ditch on Mary since the show tries so hard to make her seem likeable lol.
