It’s always a challenge to make things that feel familiar but are trying to not retread what previous brilliant illustrators have done. Edgar Rice Burroughs (b. 1875) and Joe Jusko (b. 1959) are two September 1 babies who share more than a birthday. Jusko @juskoart is a leading fantasy and sci-fi painter (and two-time Heavy Metal cover artist) who’s visualized quite a lot of scenes in the worlds Burroughs created. These include both Tarzan’s Earth and John Carter’s Mars (or Barsoom). Here are Joe’s stylish covers for the Warlord of Mars: Fall of Barsoom mini-series published by Dynamite in 2011-12.
