so i’m a math idiot so i don’t know how compelling this is, but if she’s right it might be more profitable to go to somewhere like storenvy or tictail. i highly recommend for everyone to sit down and do the math for their business specifically because this is going to impact everyone differently, but i feel like this french chick who posted this is legit and her situation is probably fairly common in terms of what she’s charging for shipping + her items
also the way they separate their fees on etsy confuses the fuck out of me. it’s so much easier to just pay a monthly fee that stays the same, then the normal credit card fee and that’s all. plus you get discounted shipping with many services like shopify....this is just such a hike, price wise, and i am Not here for it

Is there a reason most artists choose not to use ebay as a place to sell as opposed to sites like etsy or storenvy?
Kiriska:Â I can't speak for other artists, but I'd imagine it's because:
Ebay has hella seller fees. 10% in most cases.
You can’t really customise your seller page or listings on Ebay, so you have less control over branding. Ebay doesn’t look very professional.
While there are artists that sell there, Ebay doesn’t really have a reputation as a place for artists. I think most people still think of garage sale-type sales on Ebay, so they’re less likely to search for artist merch there.
I don't know if this is helpful at all but I sell on Depop and I can say that it's very easy to make sales if you just want to sell clothes, shoes, or other items (using a lot of tags definitely helps you get noticed more). There's no fee to post and they only take 10% out of your sales. I've also seen quite a few people doing custom work and stuff on there and making a bit of sales. It may not be for everybody but I thought maybe this could help?!
i definitely think that depop is a really good option, especially if you’re selling apparel + accessories--it’s somewhere that seems to get a lot of traffic and has a good culture in terms of their marketplace, plus it’s not impenetrable like etsy’s SEO tends to be? basically it’s much easier to tag things appropriately and actually get them found, imo.Â
do you know if that 10% that they charge also applies to shipping costs? that’s one of the biggest annoyances for me about this etsy change--you essentially need to hike up your prices even more to accommodate for the fact that you’re paying an extra 5% on your shipping prices, which i feel like is them just trying to push everyone into padding their prices and offering free shipping--very much like big box stores in terms of attitude rather than working with individual sellers.Â
but yeah! def an option for apparel/accessories or vintage stuff for sure! i’ve not ever seen something like artists selling on there though, like prints or charms or illustration type of merch, or really small crafts like embroidery (at least when i’ve been on there, doesn’t mean there isn’t any--would love to hear folks’ feedback who use it more often since i’ve never made a purchase thru there) so that might be a caveat, potentially.
