Yoshitomo Nara: E.S.P. // GRIEVOUS ANGEL (2012)

Miles Davis - "R.J." From the album E.S.P. (August 16, 1965)
Last song scrobbled from iTunes at Last.fm
File under: The Second Great Quintet
E.S.P. was released on 16 August 1965, ushering in Miles Davis' "2nd great quintet," which included 28-year-old Ron Carter on bass, 25-year-old Herbie Hancock on piano, 31-year-old Wayner Shorter on tenor saxophone, and 19-year-old Tony Williams on drums.
Recorded before Davis underwent hip replacement surgery in April 1965 (which kept him in the hospital for 3 months, and then back in November for another hip surgery after a fall), Davis only wrote one song on the album, "Agitation," and co-wrote (with Ron Carter) "Eighty-One," and "Mood." Shorter wrote the title track and "Iris," while Hancock provided "Little One."
Taking a step toward free jazz, and "flirting with rock" (as Brian Morton wrote), E.S.P. is considered one of the recordings that defined "modern jazz." It would be the last album to include Davis' wife, Frances on the cover, as she left him shortly after the photoshoot and filed for divorce in 1966.
