It is easy to continue to fall into dysfunctional patterns because they are familiar. Same with dysfunctional relationships.
We come to expect the chaos that comes after a few moments of calm and we tell ourselves that we're "growing" through it and that we are better because of that.
Unfortunately, this is delusion. The chaos that comes from that dysfunction is doing nothing but draining you and keeping you trapped in a dynamic that is keeping you stuck. It feels "rewarding" after you seem to work through problem after problem that appears, but have you stopped to consider that your skills may be better used in a much better situation that is actually helping you to progress?
It is much easier said than done, but if you find yourself in a dysfunctional relationship, pattern, or environment, do not get attached. Do not feel as if you can "fix" this situation. Oftentimes, the problems at play in situations like these run much deeper than you can ever be responsible for. You will drain and hurt yourself by continuing to try to heal the sickness that is at play in these situations.

uhm uhm uhm I love when people write Dream and Tommy as toxically co-dependant, especially during the exile arc because yes!!! Yes i love itttt.
Because like, Tommy latching on to the only person who his life who has been a constant.
Sure, just a constant of suffering, but despite all the awful things Dream has done, he is still the only person that, at the end of the day, Tommy truly believes won't abandon him fully and can't erase from his life. and Tommy convincing himself it's alright to be attached, it's healthy, even, because Dream wasn't mean to him all the time, and they were genuinely friends for a short period, so clearly Dream doesn't only want to cause Tommy pain.
And then, on the other end, Dream wanting Tommy to be 'good' and wanting to be the person to teach him that because he genuinely believes he is doing the right thing, but accidently becoming way more attached then he intended because eventually Tommy is the only person in Dream's life who CAN'T leave him. The only person Dream knows that, at the end of the day, will not push him away permanently because he can't.
Dream convincing himself it's ok that he's obsessive over Tommy in such a way, because he just really wants Tommy so succeed in learning and that he fully belies Tommy and him were- ARE -friends, so clearly Tommy trusts him and won't abandon him and he's treated Tommy 100% correctly.
basically they both need therapy and everyone they loved left them in some way or another and they latched onto the only person they can literally never remove themselves from.
extra angst being that Dream & Tommy were actually friends (not,,, whatever exile was) pre-war and had like a a blooming little brother + older brother thing going on, and can't pull away from that dynamic.
(Also, Tommy losing both his older brother's (Wilbur, Techno) and Dream losing his brother's-in-arms (Sapnap, Punz, George), both attempting to make up for that lost attachment!!)

23. Jotaro hates tying knots. As such, he avoids wearing shoes with laces and secures things using chains, velcro, or buttons instead of string or rope whenever possible.
Attempts to tease him about this are met with fierce anger.
24. Jotaro never wanted to have his own children, only conceiving Jolyne out of familial obligation - primarily to ease Joseph's concerns about keeping the Joestar bloodline alive.
Jotaro was left with a lot of unresolved feelings over this, as Joseph was already going senile at the time and all of Jotaro's trusted social circle had downplayed his concerns about parenthood. (Jotaro had also been hesitant to get married - and his concerns were downplayed very similarly by the same people.)
The revelation of Josuke (someone else who could continue the bloodline) further complicated Jotaro's feelings - especially after he deduced that Joseph knew of Josuke's existence at least several years before Jotaro got married. (Jotaro was already married and had Jolyne by the time Joseph revealed Josuke's existence to him.)
Despite this, Jotaro tried his best to love his daughter and give her the best life he could. He made it a point to never blame Jolyne for his struggles with parenthood (and instead blamed himself for inadequacy), as well as to keep his struggles unknown to her, lest she feel that he didn't love her. To ensure this, Jotaro distanced himself from home (using work) whenever he wasn't in a good place emotionally.
Unfortunately, Jotaro's unresolved feelings made his emotional state get worse with time. He ended up disconnecting from his entire social circle and spending more and more time away from his wife and daughter - becoming an emotionally neglectful and absent spouse/parent. Eventually, this resulted in him and his wife's divorce.
No matter his intentions behind them, Jotaro's absences spoke louder than any of his words did. Jolyne felt unloved and unwanted, keenly aware that her father was never around and always seemed eager to get away from home whenever he was there.
By the time of Stone Ocean, Jotaro knew (and was regretful) that he had failed Jolyne as a father. At this point, he was so worn down by his miserable life that he barely cared about what would happen to him anymore - he just wanted Jolyne to survive in the desperate hope that she could still have a better, happier life than he ever did...even though he knew he had greatly damaged her chances of it.
25. Jotaro ended all contact with his mother shortly before getting his bachelor's degree in America. Because of this, Holy never knew anything about his adult life, besides the fact that he had graduated.
Jotaro's wife, Joseph, and Suzi-Q were the only people besides Jotaro who knew why he cut ties from Holy. All three supported him in his decision.
Jotaro did not invite his mother to his graduation. Holy was also never told that Jotaro got married or that he had a child (all Jolyne ever learned of Holy was that she was "a bad grandma" and not allowed to visit).
Joseph and Suzi-Q upheld Jotaro's wishes to keep Holy out of his life, keeping her in the dark about his life and family (even as they continued to visit their daughter and communicate with her well into their twilight years).
Holy never went to America to visit Jotaro, not even while they were still communicating (much to Jotaro's relief).
Holy was kept entirely unaware that Jotaro was in Japan during Diamond is Unbreakable.
26. Star Platinum fully manifested several months before Jotaro's first appearance in Stardust Crusaders. While DIO's use of the Stand Arrow initiated the development of Stands in all Joestars, Star Platinum's emergence was a direct response to Jotaro being emotionally overwhelmed by a deeply traumatic personal loss.
Star Platinum was formed to protect its user from distress in order to make him feel more secure. Jotaro soon learned it would even protect him from himself - acting against his own will if necessary. (Star was compliant with stopping Jotaro's heart during DIO's battle, as it understood this was a necessary gamble to protect Jotaro's wellbeing in the long run.)
Star Platinum did not reveal its full form prior to Stardust Crusaders because it knew that Jotaro was afraid of it. For similar reasons, it avoids physical contact with Jotaro unless absolutely necessary. ("Overlap" - where Stands only partially separate from their user to act as extensions of their bodies - does not feel like physical contact to Jotaro.)
Jotaro frequently disassociates from his emotions by projecting them into Star Platinum instead - a survival tactic to keep Jotaro alert and focused when emotions could overwhelm him. As such, Star Platinum is often more aware of and reflective of Jotaro's true emotional state than Jotaro himself.
Star Platinum looks incredibly human, especially in its facial features, because of how deeply it embodies Jotaro's true self.
27. Holy treated Jotaro as an emotional replacement for his absent father. This behavior began once Jotaro was old enough to hold conversation and worsened with every year...becoming especially concerning after Jotaro reached puberty.
Jotaro had a very isolated childhood because his mother struggled to make connections with others in Japan, meaning that she primarily relied on him for company. His mother's reliance on him caused Jotaro to become self-sufficient at a young age so he could take care of her.
Holy talked Jotaro out of pursuing a dream career in sports because she didn't want him to abandon her by traveling like his father - who was a touring jazz musician. (Jotaro was 10 years old when this happened.)
Jotaro's only friend prior to Stardust Crusaders, his high school classmate Shigeo, was kept secret from Holy because Jotaro didn't want her to be upset that he was spending so much time with someone else. (Jotaro had no one to turn to once Shigeo was gone.)
Jotaro's transformation from "a good boy" to irritable and distant delinquent coincided with the realization that he hated how much physical affection his mother gave him. He started snapping at Holy so she'd leave him alone, but struggled to enforce his physical boundaries beyond this. Soon enough, Holy learned to ignore his outbursts. (The female high school classmates who harassed Jotaro acted similarly.)
Although saving Holy's life was always Jotaro's biggest concern on the trip to Egypt, being away from her for so long also helped Jotaro realize that he needed/wanted to live independently from her - free from her constantly clinging presence in his life.
Holy reacted very poorly to Jotaro's decision to go abroad for college, and after several years of having to walk on eggshells around her, Jotaro chose to cut her out of his life for good.
