"Buddy, are you telling me you've never smoked? Not even once?" Duncan exclaims in surprise, looking at Trent as if he was an alien who had just landed on Earth.

"Not that many people smoke, you know? don't act tough just because you've got a cigarette between your lips," he replies in a serious, deadpan tone, his fingers gently brushing the guitar strings as he sat on the grass, creating a delicate melody in the dead of the night.

Everyone else was already asleep, except for the two of them, who were strengthening their bond by spending sleepless nights outside the cabins. It wasn't the first time Duncan had seen Trent in the middle of night, lying on the grass gazing at the stars or playing his guitar. But on this particular day, now that their friendship had deepened — he decided to sit closer.

"You really should try it; it helps me a lot. Any problem? It vanishes the moment I take a drag, inhale and then exhale the smoke into the air."

"It's bad for your health," Trent said, looking at the punk with a puzzled expression; he simply couldn't understand what was fun about smoking or why everyone had suddenly decided to normalize it.

"But it's good for your 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥" Duncan remarked with a smirk on his chapped lips, offering the half-smoked cigarette to the dark-haired boy.

Trent stared at it: the fact that the cigarette had already been smoked indicated that Duncan had taken a few drags, holding it between his lips. Sharing a cigarette probably seemed like a perfectly normal thing to the punk, but extremely intimate to Trent.

An indirect kiss between two guys who had nothing in common.

"Right, let's see what all the fuss is about," says Trent, curious despite his earlier judgment ; clutching the cigarette between calloused fingers and slowly raising it to his lips for the first drag.

Let’s just say that, given his inexperience, it was a disaster: the smoke went down the wrong way, triggering a violent fit of coughing, he didn't even have time to exhale properly as he immediately handed the cigarette to Duncan, who was laughing his head off.

"Man, you should've seen your face, it was priceless!" the punk said, laughing so hard that tears began to form at the corners of his blue eyes; he loved to watch an inexperienced Trent nearly choke on the smoke.

"Fine, then show me how it's done," the dark-haired boy retorted, shooting Duncan an annoyed look.

He took the cigarette back, lightly brushing Trent’s fingers. He brought it to his lips and took a drag.

"See, you have to take a drag, then inhale and exhale properly,, there’s no need to rush." He exhaled the smoke, which tinged the night a grayish hue.

"It doesn't look that hard… so why can't I do it?" Trent asked, before snorting derisively. "Screw it, I don't even care; it's not like I'm actually going to start smoking…"

"Come on, let's try again. Come here, I'll show you how to inhale," Duncan whispered, patting the grass beside him.

Trent moved closer and the two boys found themselves almost face-to-face in the dead of night, where the only sounds were their voices and, every now and then, the calls of nocturnal animals.

Duncan took a slow drag on his cigarette before tossing the butt onto the grass; then he stepped closer and blew the smoke straight into Trent’s open mouth, before the other boy even realized what was happening.

"Inhale..."

And the dark-haired boy obeyed, inhaling the smoke for the first time. It all happened so quickly, in an atmosphere that was strangely awkward, yet he wanted to do it again and again.

He wondered what his parents would think if they saw the scene: their son smoking and standing so close to a guy like Duncan ; they would have been furious, but right then, there with them, there were neither his parents nor any cameras to capture the moment.

And after the events of that night, Trent started smoking a bit more with Duncan, or rather, inhaling the smoke through his lips.
