Freshwater dives at Hagelstein/Everstein, Utrecht. The water was nice and fresh in places - lowest was 7c. First two dives this year.

This is a Long spined porcupine fish (Diodon holocanthus). It belongs to the family of puffer fishes and world wide there are about 120 different species. Special of puffer fish is that they can inflate themselves with water and air (when on the surface). They do this as a form of defense. In combination with their spines it makes them hard to get for predators. Some species also contain an extremely potent poison in their internal organs. in spite of all these seemingly very aggressive methods of defense, it is actually one the cutest fish you can see underwater here.
