“They all know that we’re headed back for the Urca’s gold. They all know where it is, and that its defenses are weakened. We simply cannot allow that information leaking out onto the beach.” BLACK SAILS— 02x03 “XI”
thinking about them today....
ahhh season 1. a simpler time where dufresne wasn't The Worst. instead he was a little fraidy cat accountant with a tiny crush on billy bones
2x06, Regarding why Billy wanted to "punish" Dufresne—was it really because Dufresne betrayed the crew? I don't think so… and honestly, I feel like Dufresne opened the door to Billy's sexuality, the part of himself he'd been trying so hard to avoid facing.
i have a minor obsession with dufresne bc he is so bad at being a black sails character. he just fucking sucks, in every way. s1-2 of black sails is like: are you willing to be terrible and violent and merciless for the things you care for? do you have the motivation to do what needs to be done for your cause? and then s3 is how will you live with what you’ve done? how will you make something from it? and s4 is like can anything actually good be born of violence? and dufresne is NOT making it to s4 because he doesn’t gaf about any of the moral quandaries. he has no motivations beyond seemingly gaining power? and black sails is so far beyond weak points about the corrosive nature of power- they’re chapters ahead in this story. but here’s dufresne, plundering along, trying to play with the pros. ripping someone’s throat out with his TEETH and siding with the fucking english the second he feels threatened. except, he can’t do anything beyond that. he literally just lays there, both in the scene where he goes over the rails AND in the whole damn show. he has to be hauled up by someone. he can do the terrible things but he has no opinions on them, he’s just doing them to do them! he’s missing the whole philosophical points of the show. he’s some random foot soldier who doesn’t use his brain and bases all of his actions off animal instinct and the show is like yeah, that discounts you from this narrative. and then on top of all of that!!!! he wears stupid little glasses and has two terrible haircuts and he gets his head stomped in because he’s a stupid fucking idiot with no morals

so ironic that the things Flint does to ensure his plans go forward are often the things that become his undoing
You orchestrated it all.
The deaths, the destruction, the loss. All to achieve this very moment. Is it possible a man could do such a thing?
Congratulations, Captain.
Black Sails - season 2, episode X
This post is just to appreciate Jannes Eiselen, the actor who plays Dufresne in the first season of Black Sails.
Dufresne had to be recasted because Jannes was diagnosed with a brain tumor that prevented him from continuing in the series. He died in September 2016, two and a half years after the end of this season.
Although I like the job Roland Reed does in the next two seasons, I like Dufresne the most in season 1. He is one of the smartest men on the ship and over the course of this season he learns to toughen up after discovering the true implications of being a pirate.
You did a great job, Jannes Eiselen, and I will never forget your Dufresne. I hope you and your family were proud of what you did here.
