(Too) Many good acts: MAZ, Antiheld, Luke Noa, Bartleby Delicate, Giant Rooks and Josh Island at Fête de la Musique, Dudelange, 16.06.2018
Honestly, Mel and me agreed we’d like to be consulted next year about the timetalbe so we won’t have to make any difficult decisions 😜
While we had a list of acts we definitely wanted to see, we were ready to check out others in our „free time“. One that really impressed us was MAZ, which was quite a surprise as neither of us is into rap. It will probably never become a music style I listen to at home, but I really enjoyed his live performance. NOT a surprise that he was last year’s Screaming Fields song contest winner (Screaming Fields is a contest/festival for young Luxembourgish musicians). I didn’t really get into the swing of taking videos this time around (not many photos either, sorry 😳) , so here’s the official video for Future And Me off MAZ’ debut album Immortalisation.
The next act on the main stage was more Mel’s choice, but I liked them well enough to already agree to see them again. I’m talking about Antiheld, a young 5-piece from Stuttgart who describe their style as „street cur pop“. A wee bit self-depreciating, this description already hints at their sense of humour / sacarcsm which is also present in their lyrics. They sure know how to get the crowd going and I expect their gig at the Kleiner Klub in Saarbrücken next January to be a sweaty affair... Not sure if other people in the audience knew their music better than me, but I definitely wasn’t prepared for Sonnenkind and the story behind it (singer Luca wrote it for a childhood friend’s funeral last year). A moving song which proves that Antiheld have more in store than „just“ feel-good music.
The first decision to make was between Port Cities and Luke Noa. My plan had been to attend Port Cities’ performance on the main stage while Mel had already announced she’d rather go and watch Luke Noa on the folk & blues stage. As you can see, I followed her at some point. I don’t know what went wrong during soundcheck, but the bass for Port Cities was downright awful and I couldn’t stand it for longer than three songs 😞 Luke played with a band (The Basement Beats?), so here’s a video I found of them (?) on Youtube
All right, I know it was my own fault: when writing the review of Koll an Aktioun, I complained about Josh Island and Tuys playling two different stages at the same time at FdlM and hoped it wouldn’t be the same for Bartleby Delicate and Giant Rooks – guess what happened!! 😭 Well, we could listen to Georges for half an hour at least. Tough to leave, but while we’re sure to see him a few more times this year, the same isn’t true for Giant Rooks, so...
We were compensated with a front row spot and a tremendous performance by one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen (thought about it and really, they’re second only to Editors in my personal best-of-list). High quality songwriting (always catchy, but never boring or sounding one like the other) combined with such energetic live presence – so ready for an album and an extensive headline tour! First time I’ve seen a band being allowed to play an encore at a festival, and rightfully so. Let me share once more my video of Thunder that I took when they supported Mighty Oaks in Strasbourg (btw the video with almost the most views on my channel, only beaten by Bastille’s performance of Grip at Rock-A-Field 2015 😉)
Yes, that’s right, we opted for Josh Island afterwards. Dudelange is Tuys’ hometown and we guessed their crowd would be big enough without us, suspicion proved right by the photos posted later on Facebook and elsewhere. Alas, we missed Tuys being joined on stage by Georges and Edsun, but you can’t have it all. Josh’s set was actually the perfect ending to the day, and he also had a surprise guest on stage. Couldn’t find out how to embed a video from Facebook, so here’s the link:

Yeah, some more rap, go sue me ✌️😇😂
