Built in the 1950′s, the Sahara Motel of Ducktown, Tennessee is now a shell of what it once was. Upon opening, it was one of the most popular lodging sites in town and according to the former owner, Elvis frequently stayed here. The Sahara was named after the local desert landscape, caused by the mining that took place in the town. When the mining ended in the late 1980′s, the town completely transformed - from barren to lush - which is obvious from comparing these two photos. The property was recently sold for 185k and there are plans to renovate but as of 2020, it still sits vacant.

Probably wasn’t too good for the workers either.
“The smelting stage gives the name pyroprocessing: processing by fire. The smelter for sulfide ores produces sulfur dioxide gas. This is scrubbed from the flue gases to make sulfuric acid for leaching copper from oxide ores. ... A by-product of the smelting and converting furnaces is sulfuric acid.”
