the messy confusing and misterious story of the brazilan dubs of the jungle emperor leo franchise
do you wanna hear my autistic ass ramble about brazilan dubs of an old ass cartoon no one cares about aside from an old controversy that has been proved fake? of course you do!
the frist jungle emperor leo anime was dubed in brazlian portugese with the NBC version as basis by studio aic (who also handled one of the brazlian dubs of princess kinigth) in the year 1967, aring on tv tupi and two years later on tv cultura (it was the frist cartoon they aired), in it leo was voiced by maria ines nodial, who was the voice of bam bam in the flinstones and marine boy in the anime of the same name. the dub also featured cuts due to censorship in the brazlian military dictatorship, only one episode of said dub can be found, most of them probably have been lost in a fire like with many older Tezuka anime dubed in portugese
fast foward to the 80s and here things get a little bit complicated, take things here with a grain of salt
there are many claims that ownard leo aired back in the 80s here on tv chanel rede record (that would be around the same time they aried jetter mars) but while the info is very scarse and theres a site that denies its existence there are enough pepole who claim that it exists, so unless record in the 80s aired another cartoon named "leo the lion" or something similar (wich isnt likely) this dub shurely existed
in the late 80s or early 90s there was APARENTLY a dub of the 1989 jungle emperor anime produced, if i recal corectly it was made by studio bks (aic's succsesor), there are chançes this dub was recorded and that the tapes are with someone or on some old warehouse, the dub was unreliased, i heard it was due to violence but i also heard it was due to Tezuka's death, eather way take everything i said about the 1989 anime with THE BIGEST GRAIN OF SALT EVER! i got it all from some youtube coments, but if you guys find more sources about it do tell me!
now, we're in the 90s and in 1998 a new dub aired on fox kids based on the canadian dub, it was dubed by sigima (yes thats the studio's name) and later by bks, the most notable part of this dub was that leo was voiced by ursula bezera, who would later voice kid goku and naruto, in the Tezukaverse she was the voice of tink in the 2004 black jack anime and was the dubing director of the 2009 astroboy movie. in 2001 a dvd of this dub was relised by spot films (who beleve it or not would soon become video brinquedo) (i actuly have this dvd btw) and it would later air in 2005 on the chanel boomerang. since the canadian redub only dubed 45 episodes insead of the 52 the anime has the 90s dub probably has this amount of episodes or a bit less, but i think a small amout of them migth be lost, but this dub is shurely easyer to find!
now we get to 2019, two dubs where produced, one of jungle empeor leo 1997 and another one of the 2009 movie "the brave can change the future" , both directed by miriam ficher (who voiced chocola in don dracula) and dubed in the studio tecniart, leo in the 1997 movie was voiced by renan vidal (goh in pokemon, rad in ok ko) and it was it was originaly tougth that rune was voiced by rodrigo ribeiro, that was until i asked him about it and he revealed that he did not voice rune but leo himself in the brave can change the future, thats how the dub of this movie was discovered! while a dvd release of the 1997 suposedly exists neather of the movies have been oficaly released as of now. and for some strange reason when i tried to contact renan vidal about the dub he said he couldnt say much about it, i wonder why...was the dub not canceled after all?
i wil try to talk to miram fincher about it, if i do and get decent awnsers i migth do a follow up post
anyways thanks for hearing me waffle about my dumb hyperfixation!
