X PORTRAIT examines portraiture as a contested and expanding field through which artists redefine history, visibility, and resistance. The “X” functions as both a marker of the unknown and a refusal of fixed definition, creating space for identities, histories, and futures that have been obscured, erased, or rendered illegible.

The exhibition positions portraiture not simply as representation, but as a political act. To portray oneself, one’s community, or one’s history is to assert presence against erasure. The works presented here engage portraiture as both historical record and speculative possibility, documenting the realities of queer life while imagining futures beyond exclusion and marginalization. Collectively, they demonstrate how artists have long served as cultural witnesses, preserving narratives that dominant histories often seek to suppress.

At its core, X PORTRAIT argues that visibility is neither passive nor guaranteed. It is produced, defended, and continually reimagined through cultural labor. By expanding the boundaries of portraiture, the exhibition affirms the power of artists to shape public memory, challenge systems of exclusion, and insist upon the visibility of queer lives in moments when such visibility remains politically urgent.
