welp time to start putting my money where my mouth and rewrite the nine realms. starting with some very basic worldbuilding.
The science of The Nine Realms
Dragons
Dragons are a distinct group of vertebrate animals classified under the class Draconia, sharing a common internal structure despite their wide external diversity. Early scholars grouped them with reptiles due to their scales and egg-laying, but modern study clearly distinguishes them through the presence of wings and a unique secondary organ used for chemical discharge. Dragons are known for their flight and firepower although not all dragons have both or either. They are a highly diverse taxonomic group, encompassing many species with varying characteristics and multiple orders.
I.C.A.R.I.S
The International Crevasse And Research Investigation Station, is a high-tech research outpost in Scotland built in 2310 by the Rakke Corporation to study the new Kullersen Fissure. They map out the geography of the fissure and study any phenomena that happens in and around it.
The Research Center
The research center is the main building on the I.C.A.R.U.S site. It is where most business takes place and where scientists test their findings. The building is equipped with high-tech equipment, such as the drones in the hangar and state-of-the-art laboratories that assist in the study of materials found in the fissure. It also houses the administrative offices and the central control room, where the property is managed.
Rakke Town
Rakke town refers to the onsite housing facilities provided by the Rakke corporation for the employees working at project I.C.A.R.U.S. All employees are made to live in stone dome houses, made to withstand the infrequent aftershocks to facilitate the long term study of the fissure. Each dome contains a joint living room and kitchen, a bathroom and two bedrooms, with the exception of Directors dome. Larger domes are dedicated to providing essentials to the residents, such as the market which has a general store for groceries, toiletries and snacks, as well as a cafeteria to provide meals for staff. There is also the recreational center and medical bay, to help upkeep general health. The recreational center also serves as a daycare to watch over the younger children. The whole site is powered by windmills that are scattered around the site, providing clean and renewable energy to all the facilities.
The Dragon Lair
The dragon lair is an underground cavern used by the dragon club as a base of operations. It‘s used as a place to house and train their dragons. It also serves as a playground, feeding station, first aid station, meeting area, and an easy, unseen passage into the fissure leading into the Hidden World. The cave features many large stalagmites and stalactites and it has its own hot springs for swimming.
The Kullersen Fissure
The Kullersen Fissure is a newly formed canyon that has been discovered to be deeper than the Mariana trench, having been discovered to be upto 9 miles deep. The fissure is named after one Olivia Kullersen, a geologist who discovered the odd seismic activity that would eventually lead to the forming of the fissure and predicted the timeline in which it would happen.
The Nine Realms
The Nine Realms is the unofficial term, given by the children to refer to the eight major sections and the surface of the Hidden World. Each one is filled with unique environments, creatures, and particularly dragons. The Hidden World is home to all dragons and is the place they originate from. However, a recent earthquake has changed things, and soon the dragons will know true open skies once again.
The Surface| Midgard
The surface refers to the area above and around the kullersen fissure, including the Icarus Station and the plains that remained after the fissure formed.
The Crystal Realm| Asgard
The crystal realm is the first realm discovered by humans, and the closest realm to the surface. This section of the hidden world is the one we're most familiar with, filled with many gem structures and coral-like formations. This realm is the main source of the formation of dragoncite. It is filled with many variations of the fluorescent stone and from there the many veins branch out into the other realms.
The Fire Realm| Muspellheim
The Fire Realm is a vast cavern filled with constant volcanic activity, making the terrain incredibly dangerous. Lava pours from the ceiling into pools of magma below, raising the temperature to unbearable levels. The dragons that live here are incredibly tough, and serious preparations must be taken to ensure safe exploration. In spite of everything, life aside from dragons has still found a way to thrive.
The Ice Realm| Niflheim
The Ice Realm is a cold, wide-open space filled with ice and snow. The area is constantly blanketed by mist, which freezes into powder snow and coats plants in rime ice. Be careful where you step, as the terrain is extremely mountainous. The mist hides high peaks and deep drops, and one wrong step could mean falling and never getting back up.
The Giants Realm| Jotunheim
The Giants’ Realm is defined by its immense scale. Everything here is larger than life, towering over you and making you feel miniscule by comparison. life here feels displaced from time, as though it belongs to a distant past.
The Nature Realm| Vanaheim
The Nature Realm is filled to the brim with plant life, forming a massive jungle that covers everything, from the ground to the walls. There are even plants growing from the cavern’s roof, forming gorgeous canopies that make great nests for the dragons who live here.
The Desert Realm| Alfheim
The Desert Realm is a wide, flat expanse of scorching sand where it always seems to be daytime. The cavern roof is lined with dense concentrations of dragoncite, which constantly shines over the desert below.
The Ocean Realm| Svartalfheim
The Ocean Realm is a massive cavern filled entirely with water. The deeper you go, the darker and colder it becomes. All the dragons who live here are adapted for life in the sea and the creatures who live alongside them are incredibly diverse.
The Dark Realm| Hellheim
The Dark Realm is the most hostile of the Nine Realms. Light here is scarce and the environment has a strange way of inviting hostility. Dragons that dwell here are elusive and dangerous, adapted to the darkness and seemingly untouched by fear.
Dragoncite
Dragoncite is a silicate based gem that forms naturally and is the key to life in the Hidden World. When heated, dragoncite will release an ionic effect that can recreate the properties of sunlight, bringing life and light to the hidden world.
Eel Pox
Eel pox does not exist, the book of dragons describes it as a sickness but in truth, all dragons are allergic to eels. Eels carry a toxin that has an irritating effect on the organ that produces their fire, causing them to produce excess chemicals in the same way humans produce mucus. In a similar vein eel pox does not exist for humans either. Eels like most animals carry bacteria, which can cause various illnesses in humans.
Howdy!
I would like your guys' opinions on something that I've been struggling with. I know a lot of you really like my Nine Realms Rewrite, but the reason I started drifting away from it is this:
At what point does a rewrite stop being a rewrite?
What I mean by that is at what point does it just become its own thing? And would any of you really care about that?
I do kinda want to continue it, I'm just not sure if it's worth it anymore.
How many (HTTYD) Nightlights are there?
It's me fixing my mistakes from ungodly 2025 Seems I have missed quite a bit due to scenes I looked at, one due to my own fault of missing markings and another one due to the game showing the dragons at one scene and then never again showing them later on
Whether you consider nine realms 'canon' or if you cant their night furies as well or not is up to you!
If you've seen HTTYD 3 then you know there are 3 of the babies (Dart, Pouncer and Ruffrunner)
If you've seen The Nine Realms then you know there's also Thunder
But if you kept updated with it then you probably know that we also see his siblings (Shadow, Goggles, Splattertail) Parents (nameless) and Elder. (oh man)
Also other than his tail find being a completely different build than others, his wings are see-through
Ok, what other nightlights there are? Well, the babies from The Nine Realms credits!!(??)
They appear in 6th epsiode of 8th season (ending) credits! They're certainly not his siblings since the designs don't match so- children probably? Since looking at other credit drawings it seems like some time has passed since the ending. Which also means that there's another nightlight which is Thunder's partner (we don't see them so we won't count it).
So, what's left? The game ''DreamWorks Dragons: Legends of The Nine Realms'' which was actually first to show The Elder and more nightlights (by around 2 months).
Elder also appears to be the same size as Thunder here. But it seems he was already planne to be 'different' since out of all other nightlights he's the only one with different tail fins build. The white one seems to be early model for the mother as it's been brought to my attention by venality-strykes. But since it's not the exact same model and there's no confimation for their relationship I will be counting the white one on left as separate one!
Another 4 night lights. Next to Plowhorn it's the Elder, in front of Wu & Wei it's the previous mostly white one
and a shot I.... so missed. There's two I did not see anywhere else that doesn't check up with any other dragons and their markings
Honestly they seem like the same but reused model, but since there are two of them in the same shot, I have to count them twice.
There are total of 19 counted Night Lights!
