I love how the majority of books with trans protagonists (that I've read) are like "hey, things will get better, find people who love and care about you and be yourself, it's okay, you're not broken just because you don't fit into society's standards" and AJW's books are all that as well but with the added message of "and don't forget to be angry and kill your enemies!"
One thing I really like about AJW's books is how real and raw the depictions of autism are.
Because autism is not a "different set of abilities," it's not a "superpower," it is a disability and isn't just "haha good at art so creative and smart and trains/dinosaurs are so cool," it can cause dehabilitating sensory issues, severe problems with learning and processing information, and just in general problems that can severely fuck up someone's daily life. As an autistic person myself who only really grew up with the "sunshine and rainbows special interests and creativity and maybe a bit of social anxiety if you're lucky" depictions of autism that I couldn't really relate to (I legit used to have full on meltdowns over brushing my hair cause I hated how the brush felt against my scalp,) it's just really refreshing to see it being protrayed as what it actually is - a disability. It can be gross, it can be frustrating, it can mess with every aspect of someone's life. And there's no shame in that.
