"cigarette smoke" acknowledges the bitterness bubbling to the surface after the relationship deteriorated. enough time has passed that the speaker is over it (in the sense that she doesn't want the ex-lover back: "I regret you and how long I stayed") but also not over it (the thought "why'd I try at all?" still haunts her). "Tell me something honest so the memories turn dark," the track begs, fading into "the memories turn dark" and then, finally, "turn dark" ...

and then the next thing we hear is the dreamy synth melody that opens "drop dead". At first, we -- the audience -- hear "drop dead" as the beginning of a fresh, excited, definitely doomed story (with a title like that ... girl, you've got a big storm coming)

now, on our 2nd listen, we re-encounter "drop dead" as a memory ... one of the all-consuming, soaring memories that "cigarette smoke" just wants to forget
