along with disbelief and relief, one of the first things rodimus felt when the war ended was fear. mostly because nyon was gone, and that was the only home he'd ever known. the thought of staying in iacon just feels wrong.
but also because what if drift only joined the autobots as a means to an end? what if their rebuilt friendship won't last during peacetime? what if drift leaves again?
rodimus left to explore cybertron before he found the answers to those questions. he ran from them and from iacon, and in doing so, he ran from drift.
and drift is PISSED, because HE thought they were doing better, that they were on their way back to something normal. it was never going to go back to how it used to be, he knew that, but he thought they could get close to it at least.
it isn't a big blowout argument when rodimus comes back. it's a quiet, tense, terse conversation, and anyone who's had one of those can tell you how much worse they are. rodimus answers vaguely and only half-truthfully until drift grabs him by the arm, looks him dead in the eye, and asks "why did you leave me behind?"
and rodimus remembers feeling left behind in the ashes of nyon, searching for drift (or his corpse) for days, not knowing that he was already gone, before he was picked up by an autobot patrol. and he breaks.
he pulls drift off to somewhere more private and tells him all the horrible thoughts he had when the war ended. it's like pulling teeth, but he gets them out. just as the silence is starting to suffocate him, drift hugs him. and says "i told you i was never going to leave you again, and i meant it."
the next time rodimus leaves iacon, it's with drift at his side. they get a small ship and decide to explore the galaxy for a few years, at least until they feel like it's truly time to come back home.
Dratchrod Sparklings but they are twins and the three of them spend literal months snuggled up with Rodimus in the middle on the daily basis cuddling and quietly talking about how the two bitties might resemble the two sires respectively, this supported by when Roddy starts craving some of Drifts and Ratchets favorite snacks. The three of them are excited, Rodimus thinks his sparklings are inheriting from the best bots possible, even Ratchet starts thinking about raising a little medic.
But then the fated moment comes and.......
Both bitty is the split image of Rodimus with the slightest hint of Drift and Ratchets form. Its a very big suprise, but not an unwelcome one.
They look exactly like their carrier 😌
