1. Starting

She's sitting by the window, curled up in a half-deflated beanbag. Outside, the little forest of trees rustle in the wind and the rush of cars rumbling along the road below. The sky is clouded, but patches of blue peek through the grey. Every so often, a ray of sunlight slants down through the glass, briefly illuminating the narrow room before it fades away.

The thicket of trees across the road is growing more familiar to her. She knows the tiny path that runs through it, the overgrown pond that lies at its centre, the sloping bank that gives way to the tarmac of the road. She knows the way that the trees muffle the sound of the cars and buses, and the chirps and barks of the few birds and squirrels that make their homes in the high branches. 

She knows just how small it is- the little trail takes barely a minute to walk in its entirety. 

And so she wonders why- whenever she wanders idly through the trees- she keeps on glancing over her shoulder. As though she is expecting something, awaiting something that has not yet arrived.
