Friday Fun Leather Fact Leather does not have to be dyed! This is a common misconception and I see it often with my customers who think that leather must be dyed "to protect it." Nope. The dye is for decoration -- to make it look nice and to suit social expectations. Most vegetable tanned leather will look, well, flesh-toned, when it is un-dyed. Gradually it will darken to a tan to rich brown color depending on the environment and how it is treated. The name of the color "tan" comes from the color of tanned leather! π So, often, when we are dyeing leather a variety of brown, we are just replicating the natural, time-darkened color of leather. These colors also tend to be more color-fast unlike brighter colors like blue, grim or purple. Some tanning processes, like chromium tanning, make the leather more receptive to dye (we talked about the different tanning processes in an earlier post). And sometimes additives are added to the leather during the dyeing process like oils. The real protection for your leather comes from proper care of the leather itself through cleaning and occasional conditioning. Done correctly, a quality leather good will last many years.
