Hermione: Wow Harry! I’m really glad you realised that. How did you come to see it though?

Harry: Well first I was getting pretty jealous of him and Parkinson, and I was pretty obsessed with him back in Sixth Year, and I realised I’ve been looking at him more recently

Harry: And also I’ve been hearing voices from the walls whispering in my head every night telling me that I’m in love with Malfoy

“I can’t believe I have to do this with you again, Potter. I thought you and Justin were a decent match. He was everything you said you wanted in a partner." Malfoy picked a piece of paper off of his desk and started reading from it. “‘Nice to me and my friends. Romantic. Easy to talk to. A good sense of humor.’”

“Yeah, but there wasn’t any spark.” Harry shrugged. “I don’t know why I came back here either. I’m starting to think you’re not very good at your job.”

“I’m amazing at my job. I’m responsible for thirty different marriages, at least nine of which have resulted in children. I’m the biggest boon to the wizarding birth rate since Celestina Warbeck’s ‘Bedroom Magic.’ You’re just picky.”

“I know what I want, sue me.”

“Relationships that last aren’t about what you want, they’re about what you need. You want someone who is nice, who will say all the right things and swoon on command. But you’re too hopped up on public adoration for any of that to feel real. What you need is honesty. Someone who will tell it to you like it is and call you on your shit so that when they tell you they love you, you actually believe them.”

Harry’s brain short-circuited for a moment, not entirely sure how offended he should be by Malfoy’s frank assessment before another, much more offensive thought crossed his mind. “You realize you just described yourself.”

“Fuck, I did. I’m blunt in a way that would be good for you, and I know you think my jokes are funny, don’t try to deny it. You’re impressive and competent, which is what I want. And you don’t take my shit, which is what I need. It would be a good match. Fuck.” 

“Fuck,” Harry agreed. “I’ll pick you up at 8.”

“7:30.” Malfoy slid as far down into his chair as possible. “I hate how good I am at my job.”

The movies don’t include this crucial scene so it’s easy to forget this part and assume Draco only starts talking to him because he’s Harry Potter. But that is totally wrong. And Harry’s simple clothing at the robe shop makes it obvious that he’s not some rich Sacred 28 child like Draco, and Draco has no way of even knowing Harry’s blood status at first. For all Draco knows at this point, Harry could be a lower-class Muggle-born, the antithesis of what Draco has been raised to want anything to do with.

Yet Draco still initiates a conversation and, with his flawed social skills, starts saying all the things he’s been raised to believe will impress a person and make a person like him. And the question of whether both of Harry’s parents were magical isn’t even the first thing he asks!

"It's complete rubbish! No one cheated. It was an amicable breakup. But Gin's getting Howler after Howler, and the Harpies have had to beef up security." Harry tosses the newspaper onto Malfoy's desk. "Skeeter can't get away with this again. I want to sue her and the Prophet for slander."

Malfoy shakes his head. "Actually, it's libel."

Harry blinks. "Isn't that the same thing?"

Malfoy chuckles. "While I'd normally love to make a crack about your lack of intelligence, Potter, it's actually a common misconception. Libel and slander are both types of defamation, but libel is published content, and slander is spoken, as in a speech or conversation."

Harry hums. "Interesting. You really know your stuff."

Malfoy scoffs. "I'm only one of the top defamation litigators in the Wizarding World."

Harry leans back in his chair and props his feet up on Malfoy's desk just to see if he'll scowl. Which he does.

Harry smirks. "So, do you think we'd have a case?"

Malfoy snorts. "Well, it'll take a lot more than a single conversation with you to actually determine that, not to mention that no one's ever won a defamation suit against the Prophet. But," he grins, wide and a bit unsettling, "that's because they've never been sued by me."

Harry swings his legs off the desk and leans forward toward Malfoy, holding out his hand. "So, you'll do it?"
