The summary:

For as long as he can remember, Draco has been in love with his best friend. But at nine-and-twenty, he has finally had enough of dangling after the impossible.

Harry is a notorious bachelor and will never return Draco's affections, at least not in the way he craves. It's high time Draco extricated his heart from its current untenable situation and took charge of his future. His new plan is simple: he'll find himself a husband.

Of course Harry, Draco's closest and most devoted friend, will help him to find a gentleman worthy of his hand…won't he?

Luna invites him to a restaurant in muggle London for a pitch black dining experience, the sort of thing an eccentric or those that like to branch out do. They get sat at a table with gorgeous sounding silhouettes. They get to chatting and Harry immediately connects with the man he assumes is a muggle on his right (spoiler alert the man is actually draco, like imagine he accidentally grabs his forearm and feels a shiver of the dark mark but brushes it off or smth). They speak for hours and agree to connect outside when they can see again. Harry and luna leave, chatting about how they both wanted to meet their new acquaintances again (maybe luna chatted with a muggle woman who made draco come with her? i like to think draco works in a luxury muggle fashion magazine or as a model... maybe he and his friend are both models?)

The woman luna was chatting with comes out and immediately goes straight up to luna, telling Harry as she walks by that her friend would be out soon hes just fixing his hair (Harry messed it up trying to feed him pudding in the dark and missing) she drags luna off stating they need to continue they're conversation her flat leaving Harry standing there balancing back and forth on the balls of his feet.

Draco walks out with a half smile and time stops. Harry stares in shock and tries to diffuse the tension but draco stops him, interrupting him to say that he had never said thank you for saving him and his mother from azkaban. Draco says hed buy Harry a drink if he wanted and Harry shuts him down. Stating that he hadn't come to relive his past and that they should forget this even happened. Draco looks reasonably dejected, stalking off in pristine shoes apart from a scuff mark where Harry accidentally stepped on him in the dark.

Harry goes back home to think about the night, upset that the connection he had had been ruined. For the next couple days all he can think about is draco, luna starts dating dracos friend, and she is clearly a little bit hostile towards Harry, noticing dracos sad state. Everything reminds him of the obsession theyd had for each other and the conversations theyd shared over a pitch black dinner.

Harry runs into draco again, this time he is ready to talk and ask for that drink. But in the span of a week since their bad conversation dracos begun dating his old classmate Theodore nott.

Devastated, Harry goes back to that night and tries to have a better post dinner talk with draco. They tentatively call each other friends, but Harry is too scared to say how he feels, especially when he cant tell if he is actually in love with the man, or if he is even bisexual.

Two months go by and he and draco have begun a weekly pub night in a dingy muggle pub, thats where draco breaks the news he is now engaged to astoria greengrass. Harry chokes on his drink, commenting on how he hadn't even known draco was seeing her. Draco says hes not straight but astoria is aro/ace so they might as well (to please their pureblood parengs), and its not like anyone has expressed any interest in dating draco, not since the war. Harry asks if he and draco had gotten together after their accidental dinner together would draco have started dating him. Draco says they might have, but he thought Harry clearly was working through the whole bisexual thing, and adding that onto being attracted to your old school tormenter was definitely a recipe for disaster. So he probably wouldn't have gone through with anything past a wild night. (This is first theyve spoken about how they had been attracted to each other during that dinner and in school)

Harry takes time to process his feelings at home. He figures he wants that time with draco, for them to at least try before they lose their chance forever.

He goes back to that night again. His breath is shaky as he sits down next to draco. He is clear as he announces that hes bisexual, surprising luna. He hints that he had always been attracted to a rival he had in school, and that if they could connect again he would ask him out. Draco comments that he felt the same about a school rival, unknowingly speaking to Harry about... Harry. But draco feels like hes lost all chances in that regard. Draco asks Harry if hes still hung up on that man from his school days, or if he would be willing to try for something with draco now. Harry says theres always a part of him that will grieve over it a little, but he wants to move forward and not be stuck in the past, a sentiment draco can get behind.

I really wanted to have this fic fully finished, complete with a little bow on top 🎁 before posting this. But unfortunately, life had other plans, and if I have to sit on regency Drarry ANY longer I swear I will combust à la Fawkes.

So I've just posted the first couple of chapters on Ao3 today, and I'll post the rest as a WIP going forward instead. Which means I can fiiiinally wish my glorious fandom bestie a happy birthday!! Only a month late! 🙈

anyways idk what children the twins would be I'd honestly be more keen on completely new twins than using the new gen from that book i never read lmao. Harry would obviously be the 'dad' in cali but I can see him raising his kid in some bed and breakfast in godrics hollow.

Draco as the 'mum' in London but honestly Wiltshire would make more sense cause the manor is there, draco could just travel for work... idk I'd like him to be an event planner maybe? Like an event planner for the rich and famous, that would fit into why Harry's fiance (unnamed cause I can't picture anyone in this. Maybe romilda? Could be a love potion hahahah) wants to hire draco.

I'm struggling to imagine the kids meeting anywhere but hogwarts, they are about that age, and the different houses would mimic the cabins. Plus I can see the professors accidentally calling the twin the wrong last name, or reference the other parent accidentally (think 'oh your father was quite good at potions' to Harry's kid , or 'it's to be expected, given your dad's affinity for breaking the rules' to dracos.. these feel like terrible examples but you get the point) tbf I could also see them in the same house and just in different rooms but then it would be even harder to differentiate them, oh maybe that's the point...

After they switched places dracos kid who goes to Harry's house meets teddy ( I guess his character would be kost similar to chessy? I like the idea that he has already completed hogwarts) and Harry's kid will meet narcissa and all of dracos mates. Anyways I think a big thing would be everyone is harry and dracos life brings up 'the one that got away'

Instead of the purple in the movie, Draco's patterns looking similar to the Mark on his arm, and it grows as his shame does. Harry feeling like he needs to fix everything, not letting people in or sitting with his damn feelings. Still thinking about why Rumi's markings would be on Harry...

But I'm obsessed with this 😭

Astoria’s perfume lingered on his robes, a cloying sweetness of lilac and rosewater. He pulled the crest pin from his chest and tossed it onto the desk, where it landed with a muted clatter. Still, the scent clung - in his hair, his skin, his throat.

“Your father is magnificent,” she had whispered when the guards dragged Potter away. “He stood unshaken. You’ll be the same one day, won’t you, Draco? For us. For our family. Perhaps we should bring the wedding forward.”

The memory coiled tight in his gut. What she saw as devotion felt to him like shackles. He had smiled at her, because he always smiled, because he was trained to but inside, something had cracked.

Now, in the silence of his room, the smile was gone. He pressed his palms hard into his eyes until sparks danced against the dark. It didn’t help. He could still see Potter on the marble floor, bruised and broken, blood smeared across his collarbone yet still rising. Always rising.

That stubborn, reckless defiance. It should have been pathetic. It should have been pitiful. Instead, it had seared itself into Draco’s mind.

Selfless. Brave. Maddeningly, suicidally brave. Everything Draco was not.

Draco sat on the edge of his bed, shoulders folding inward as the weight of it pressed down. He tried to summon anger, disdain, the old familiar contempt he had once wielded like armor. But all he found was grief, sharp and unmoored, not for Potter, but for himself.
