i hate how the lorax has been marketed to be the exact thing he originally opposed.
turning the lorax into an 'underrated meme', getting a costume of him off amazon for halloween, creating fuck knows how much merchanise and the fuck ass 2012 movie's advertising/attempt to waterdown the story are all initiatives used to gain more profit. the ENTIRE point of the lorax was that he was anti-capitalist and pro-enviroment. yes he spoke for the trees but he also spoke for the hearts of the creatures and earth that were tortured for money of all things.
when i was a child, i used to love the lorax - i didnt know why until i realised i live and breathe his ideology. in a world where increasing populations genuinely see our vast universe as a resource created for humans only, many even seriously believing we are superior to our surroundings (an alarming amount of people ive talked to seriously believe the universe was made for us and humans aren't animals), of course the lorax is important. using the lorax as a meer pop culture reference and denying the message is exactly what the lorax had tried to warn us about. you can have any attempt of change but until the society realises the damage, it too will be twisted into something else: to me, that's the oncelers message. until something is done and as a community we wake up to realise we cannot eat money, nothing will change and we all have to try to raise the people. individually, all we can do is try, despite the chance of the onceler's fate. we have to try to be ted, we have to make change.
