Chapter Seven - ah shit, here we go again
Between the brick walls, fluorescent lights, and old fashioned uniforms, stepping into the Gotham City Police Department felt like time travel. The whole building smelled like tobacco smoke and coffee. A gruff square faced detective led Danny through the station to the commissionerâs office.Â
âTake a seat,â the detective said. âItâll be a while.â
Danny did as he was told. The metal folding chair was about as comfortable as youâd expect. A simple clock hung above the door, ticking audibly as the seconds passed.Â
The detective leaned in the doorway, watching the hall. He was fidgety, impatient. It made Dannyâs own anxiety spike.Â
After what felt like forever but was probably no more than five minutes, the detective cursed under his breath. âLook kid, Iâd love to babysit, but I got a job to do. The commissioner will be here soon. Donât. Move.â He jabbed a finger at him before taking off down the hall.Â
And wasnât that reassuring? Cold wormed its way up Dannyâs spine. He forced it down. It couldnât be Vlad. Steph said he was being held at Arkham, and that place was supposed to be secure.Â
Moments later, the rush of boots against hardwood could be heard from beyond the hall. Shouts and ringing phones quickly drowned them out. A group of officers ran past the room led by the detective from before.Â
âClose off all exits,â the man gestured with his cigarette for emphasis. âNo one goes in or out!â he plucked the walkie-talkie off his belt as he moved out of sight. âGet those streets blocked off and buildings evacuated. Do not engageââ
Danny crossed the room to the door. Whatever was happening was serious enough to send the whole station into a frenzy. People in and out of uniforms rushed up and down the hall, some carrying weapons, others gripping papers like they were a lifeline. Sirens rang through the station. Somewhere, a child was crying.Â
âTheyâre getting in touch as we speak,â An older man with a tan coat and graying hair approached the office. He paused when he saw Danny in the doorway. âIâll get back to you once we know more.â The man who had been walking beside him nodded and bolted down the hall.Â
âYou must be Danny Fenton,â the man in the tan coat said and extended his hand. âIâm Commissioner Jim Gordon. Our mutual friend tells me youâve been through quite the experience.â
Danny managed a smile as he shook the manâs hand. âYou could say that.â
âLetâs get right to business, then,â Gordon said. He opened a folder on his desk and began flipping through papers. âAccording to evidence our mutual friend gave me, it looks like your godfather is a meta, is that correct?âÂ
âYes,â Danny said. He had gone over the official cover story multiple times with Steph the last few days.Â
Gordon nodded, frowning at the documents in his hands. âThe evidence is well organized, and we have a few witnesses at our disposal. If everything goes smoothly, youâll never have to worry about Masters again.â
âVlad wonât go down without a fight,â Danny said. âHeâs wormed his way out before.â
âNot this time,â Gordon said. âNot on my watch.âÂ
Danny still felt the need to warn him. But the determination in his voice gave Danny hope. Maybe it could work this time. They might finally be free of him.
âNow,â Gordon said. âThe matter of custody. With Masters out of the picture, you will need a legal guardian.â
âI have an older sister,â Danny said. âSheâs almost eighteen. Couldnât she do it?â
âEventually, yes,â Gordon said. âBut if you want Mastersâ connections to you severed as soon as possible, âalmostâ isnât close enough. You will need a temporary guardian until then.âÂ
Danny was afraid of that. He immediately thought about Steph. They were already living with her, so it wouldnât be that big of a change. But would she want that? It wasnât exactly easy taking care of two ghost kids. Sure, she was already feeding them and put a roof over their heads, but being a legal guardian came with responsibility and obligations. No, she was already doing so much for them. He couldnât expect her to do this too.Â
âSomeone has already shown interest,â Gordon said. âThey have a lot of experience in cases like yours, and have been vetted by our mutual friend. We can set up a meeting if youâre interested.â
It couldnât hurt to have more options. Besides, Danny doubted anyone associated with Batman could be that bad. It wouldn't be forever. Just until Jazz could take over.
âSure,â Danny said. âWhatever it takes.â
Gordon nodded and made a note. âHow does tomorrow sound?âÂ
Too soon, Danny thought. âPerfect,â he said. âCanât wait.â
âGood,â Gordon said.
Danny verified some of the information Batman had given Gordon, filled out some forums, and signed a small stack of papers. Gordon explained what the court process might look like. It wasnât too different from what Danny had been through before. By the end of the meeting, he felt better about his chances. It wouldnât be like last time. He had allies now, and they werenât about to roll over to Vladâs tricks.Â
. . . . .
âYou did what?â Steph shouted.Â
Bruce sighed on the other end of the call. âThey reached out to me first.â
âSee, thereâs this really handy word I think youâll like. Itâs called no!â She shouldnât have been surprised. This is exactly the kind of shit he always pulls. âWhat happened to trusting me?â
âI stand by my word,â Bruce said. âIf Danny accepts the offer, my temporary guardianship will only be on paper.â
âAnd if he doesnât?â Steph asked.
âTheyâll keep looking until he does.âÂ
The very real possibility only fueled Stephâs anger. She knew the situation would change, but she wasnât ready to let go of the kids so soon. If someone else took custody and found out they were metas⌠Bruceâs offer seemed like nothing in comparison.Â
âOnly on paper, huh?â Steph considered it. Theyâd be required to keep in contact, and there would likely be mandatory visits. And financial supportâŚ. âFine. But I have rules.â
âI am aware,â Bruce said.Â
Steph didnât like it. But the alternative was out of the question.Â
âWhen is the meeting?â
âTomorrow. Weâre still finalizing the details. Iâll keep you updated.â
âIf I didnât know better, Iâd think you wanted me to spy on you.âÂ
âWhy would I do that?â Bruce asked. âThe meeting is at noon.â
âLet me guess. Donât be late?â
The tone sounded, signaling the end of the call.Â
Starting tomorrow, Spoiler was back on duty.Â
. . . . .Â
Apparently, a sandwich shop on the second floor of a lounge in the Diamond District was the candidateâs idea of a public space. Danny supposed he should have been more specific about the location.Â
All things considered, the shop wasnât too bad. Floor to ceiling windows made up the entire front facing wall, turning the space into a drum whenever rain hit the glass. The space was more empty than Danny would have preferred, but not suspiciously so. Of course, the lack of crowds could be intentional. Gordon did say the candidate was high profile.Â
Danny chose a table that overlooked the street below, giving him a clear view of anyone who entered the building. He tried not to fidget too much as he waited. For better or worse, he didnât have to wait long.Â
A man approached Dannyâs table with a purpose and smiled when he caught his eye. âAre you Danny Fenton?â He was dressed in unassuming clothes, but the quality combined with his designer watch betrayed his status.Â
Danny nodded, not caring to hide the suspicion in his expression.Â
âSorry to keep you waiting,â the man said. âMay I?â He actually waited for a response before he pulled out a chair, notably one seatâs worth of space away from Danny.Â
Maybe the watch was misleading? Danny tried not to judge the man too harshly. He was recommended by Batman, after all.Â
âHow are you liking Gotham so far?â the man asked.Â
âItâsâŚâ Danny searched for a word that didnât sound negative but came up empty. âDifferent.â
The man laughed. âIt certainly has character, doesnât it. Must be quite the culture shock.â
âIâm getting used to it,â Danny said. âIt helps that I have a friend who lives here.â
âGood,â the man said. âWhen Gordon told me you were from Illinois, I was worried youâd be alone. Iâm glad you have someone familiar to rely on.â
Danny nodded. Nothing about the man raised any alarms. There was a slight nervousness in his eyes, like he was anticipating something to go wrong. But he was careful not to betray it in his words. It was a little comforting.Â
They made small talk. The manâs name was Bruce, and he grew up in the city. He had fostered a few kids already, and had four of them living with him. He didnât talk about himself much beyond that. He steered the conversation back to Danny as often as possible.Â
âAre you staying in the city?â Bruce asked. âNot in a hotel, I hope.â
âNo,â Danny said. âIâm living with the friend I mentioned.â
âOh, how is that going?â Bruceâs words didnât feel condescending or prying like they might have for anyone else. If anything, he seemed genuinely curious.Â
âGood,â Danny said. He braced himself as he continued, âI actually want to stay there. If itâs possible. I mean, Iâm sure your home is great, butââ
âDone,â Bruce said.Â
Huh. Danny expected that to be harder. His surprise must have shown on his face, because Bruce smiled.Â
âIt creates some extra steps,â Bruce said. âBut if thatâs what you want, I can make it happen.âÂ
That settled that. Danny felt as if a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. The longer he talked to Bruce, the easier his choice became. By the end of the meeting, he was confident that it would be different this time. Better.Â
âIt was good to meet you,â Bruce said. âIf you ever need anything, and I do mean anything, you can contact me.â He handed Danny a silver business card from his pocket.Â
âI will.â Danny said. And he actually meant it.Â
With that, Bruce left.Â
Danny turned the card over. The company name stood out in sleek black text, and the name under it almost made Dannyâs heart stop.Â

Summary:
There's something different about the kid who just broke Barbara's library phone. She's seen her fair share of wary, wounded kids. She's no stranger to helping them where she can, offering supplies and pointing out shelters.
Most of those kids aren't wearing renn faire clothes, leaving dents in phone receivers, or talking like they just finished screaming. Or turning all her security cameras to static when they come too close.
There's a mystery here, and Babs isn't the only one who wants to solve it. But with every answer they find, ten more questions take their place.
The Fentons left Danny shattered in more ways than one. With new knowledge of his ghost half, and a damaged core, Danny comes to Gotham weak and hurting, but with a purpose. The Far Frozen and the yetis have done all they can, but Danny needs more than the ghosts alone can give.
He's two halves of a whole and while he finally has what he needs on the ghost side--the human side is a different story.
Or:
Danny's presence in Gotham starts a chain reaction.
Chapter 3 of the Prologue to Charades Tumbling Down

Reaching out, Vlad rests his hand on hers, trying to convey how earnest he feels. He wants her to understand. He needs her to understand because he needs to have his kids with him. Please let them love him. âI tried to stop him⌠I tried to save him⌠Itâs not his fault, heâs a good kid.âÂ
Sandy looks at him and blushes a bit, using her other hand to fluff her hair. For a moment, thereâs a flash of green in her eyes and a pull of something in Vladâs chest, then sheâs babbling again. âOf course, Mr. Masters. This is just paperwork, Iâm sure a business man like yourself understands. Jasmine and Daniel will do so well with you. Iâm sure youâll have custody just as soon as we get this last hiccup sorted out. Youâll make such a great father.âÂ
Huh, interesting.Â
Vlad removes his hand from Sandyâs. âYes, thank you.âÂ
She stands and opens the door for him, turning her attention to where Alicia talks to Danny and Jazz in the hall. âHello, you must be Jasmine and Daniel.âÂ
âItâs Jazz and Danny, actually.âÂ
âOf course, now if you could please follow me, we have a room where you can wait for your belongings to be delivered and then weâll soon find somewhere for you to stay tonight.âÂ
With one last final tight hug to Alicia, Danny and Jazz follow Sandy down the hall.Â
Itâs probably not necessary, but Vlad has to be absolutely sure. He doesnât want anyone to undermine his claim. Heâs well aware of a couple with the last name of Foley that is trying to make a case for Jazz and Dannyâs custody, but Vlad isnât too worried about that. His greatest threat is Alicia. Sheâs their aunt by blood and legality. All that Vlad has to the title of âuncleâ is a ten year old email.Â
âVlad.â Thereâs nothing but metal and bite in Aliciaâs voice. âIs there something else that you want?âÂ
He just pulls out his check book and signs a blank check, holding it out to her.
