London-based artist Col3trane debuted his Tsarina mixtape in 2017 and hasn’t looked back since. His latest project, the BOOT mixtape, has been touched by some of the best producers in the industry, including Rogét Chahayed (Solange, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott), and DJDS (Kanye, Charlotte Day Wilson). No stranger to collaborations, he is also featured on singles of renowned producer SG Lewis and rising artist Ebenezer.

Col3trane debuted his single “Fear and Loathing,” along with a two-part video that features his recent single “Britney” as well. The video was directed by Oscar Hudson, who has also worked with Radiohead, and comes as a precursor to Col3trane’s European tour in October. Col3trane blends genres effortlessly, with influences from R&B and hip hop, but adds a futuristic element to his tracks that set him apart. His video release ties together the trippy production and thought-evoking lyrics of the two singles with incredible continuity, as well as standing on its own as a visual piece of art.

The video begins with Col3trane getting into a small green car and driving into the desert, quite literally embarking on a trip. He ends up in a barren landscape, featuring trippy shots panning in and out on his face as he tries to grasp reality. The middle of the video is interupted by a droning buzz, which marks the beginning of a new song and opens into a still shot of a man sitting in a roadside cafe. The man drops a tab of paper that looks like a temporary tattoo of a rose into his soup. We’re guessing that little piece of paper was a little more than a temporary tattoo, as the shots that follow are a dream-like psychedelic experience. 

Col3trane stands at a water cooler in the desert as people begin emerging from being buried in the sand, most holding a bouquet of flowers as if waiting for a date. He pours a cup of flowers on a pile of dirt, which results in a rose bush sprouting overnight; sparking unnatural growth in an otherwise desolate landscape. Col3trane commented on the inspiration behind the video, saying,

"I always wanted to make a double video for ‘Fear & Loathing’ and ‘Britney.’ The acid reference is an obvious nod to Hunter S Thompson, but it was Oscar's idea for me and the other guy to turn up in each other's trips. Oscar is an amazing talent to work with. The song is about being stuck in a loop that you can't get out of and he really brought that to life with the visual."
