Day 12

For the final day of Doomsday, here's some old art of Hiccup and Toothless! I made most of it in 2024, but stopped because Hiccup's hair was a nightmare to make. I ended up mostly finishing them this summer and did the finishing touches today

Some fun facts:

- Tried a different style for Hiccup's face and I'm really happy with the result even if I'm not planning to use this style very often. It turned out very cute!

- Hiccup is be wearing his firesuit, which I showed by drawing A LOT of scales on it

- Hiccup's book has a little drawing on each page. They are all tiny versions of actual httyd book pages! (I will put images of them in a separate post (linked below) in case anyone wants to see them and/or find their irl counterparts)

Doomsday 2025 day 1 - Suit

Cards and chess are not the same, but both have kings and queens and chess does not have suits :)

The Windwalker is the reason Hiccup has his fire-suit.

Obviously he's traumatized from his years as a lava-lout slave. He probably had nightmares in those early days with Hiccup, the first time he ever felt truly safe. Especially after he had to return to lava-lout island and Hiccup nearly died several times in a row.

One day, Hiccup's Windwalker wakes Hiccup up at a time of day which every Norse God has abandoned and insists they go back to Lava-lout island.

Toothless is, of course, extremely cranky about this. Hiccup is trying very hard not to be.

Of course, Windwalker isn't strong enough to fly Hiccup anywhere yet, so they need to take The Hopeful Puffin, which means they need to bring Fishlegs, because getting it to sail anywhere is a two person job and even then it's liable to go anywhere other than where you want it to go when you aren't paying attention, including and especially the bottom of the ocean.

Hiccup leaves Stoic a note reading:

"Off to Lava-Lout Island. Not sure why. Please don't worry, I'll be back soon.

-Your son, Hiccup."

If Camicazi is there, she steals something to make them get there faster. Either a seaworthy boat or a larger riding dragon.

Either way, they make it to Lava Lout island just before sunrise. Windwalker seems to know exactly where to go, which is good because nobody else has a clue.

They end up in one of the mines.

Partially caved in, because of all the recent volcanic activity and all, but still accessible by some sort of miracle.

And in a little hidden alcove off to the side of an easily-overlooked branch of the main shaft is what can only be described as a child's refuge. There are drawings on the wall in coal and red. A little girl and two dragons. One big and one small. There's a small pool under a stalactite that gives a steady drip, drip, drip of fresh cool, water. There's a nest of scraps of cloth and fur and hair and it doesn't look comfortable at all but it's softer than the hard unyielding stone all around them.

And in the nest is a child-sized fire-suit.

(The Dragonese word for fire-suit, it should be noted, literally translates as "mother's skin")

There's a ritual for cleaning a dirty fire-suit.

Well, there isn't. Lava-louts weren't really that big on respecting the dead and their human slaves weren't really able to prioritize that what with everhthing else they had going on and weren't really allowed to clean their fire-suits in the firat place. But there is a ritual.

Well, if you consider a couple people sitting around and deciding there should probably be a ritual to be a ritual.

Soap and water didn't really seem like it sufficed, in this case.

The first part of the ritual mostly involved stopping at every island between the Lava Louts and Berk (except for the Isle of the Skullions) and looking for smells that Windwalker approved of: Mallow root, Beeswax, the buds of a particular kind of flower, and the blossoms of another.

After the Fire Suit is cleaned, a fire is made from a mixture of these things, and the fire suit is dried in the sweet-smelling flames.

god this series has so many reveals it was hard to choose. I decided to go with when it was revealed toothless was a Sea Dragon
