because i don't have tda/revelations yet, i tried looking up what's there of doomguy's flashbacks and the lore around it so here are my probably misinformed thoughts:
first of all, the flashbacks have a grey tone like they were inspired by the cancelled d4 and some props like weapons in the boxes clearly look 2016-ish, like i'm pretty sure i saw the 2016 mp burst rifle there
like i expected, these sections didn't really suit the low tech aesthetic of the classic doom universe
but the main thing here is obviously daisy
we thought it'd be something involving doomguy's family dying and daisy representing that, as if the little girl was his daughter or something
but instead it's something i kinda like less: turns out doomguy was told to detonate a hospital and then realized a little girl was still there and he failed at saving her
meaning daisy was a therapy pet for the fact that he did something bad
(when some of us thought it was a representation of his family or even just a pet he simply had because he liked bunnies)
part of why this moment bothers me is because of whether or not it can retcon the part mentioned in the d1 manual, where doomguy seemingly simply denied orders of shooting innocent people and beat up his boss afterwards
classic doom's manual makes it seem like doomguy was a straightforward righteous guy, even before the hell invasion started
you even imagine that maybe his boss was right there and said "do it now!" before doomguy turned around and beat him up, like a simple straightforward moment
but here? turns out we had a spec ops the line type moment
speaking of spec ops, a take i sometimes have is that the slayer games went hard on this fantasy/sci-fi direction to make up for the fact we almost had a "call of doom" game, yet backstory elements like a sad dad with a dead family and regret from killing an innocent are the kind you'd expect from those 7th gen military fps games
also i think doomguy being a uac marine is a bit better than being a us marine because of these reasons:
it'd make his hatred of the uac a bit more special, given he'd have more familiarity with the company and more reasons to hate them
it'd establish the uac as being powerful enough to have their own military
it'd explain the unique iconic look of the classic doomguy armor; after all, we can see that the cancelled doom 4 had those generic military designs BECAUSE it weren't uac soldiers, who get to dress with that shiny green, iconic helmets and exposed biceps
it'd also mean the uac marines get to use the uac made weaponry as a contrast to us marines using less powerfull weapons, meaning the uac gets to rival even armies and establishments from governments
between the "uaaf" (union aerospace armed forces) in the doom bible and doom 3, the uac having its own military seems like the way to go naturally
also apparently they have years/dates to the classic setting?
not 2020 like in the disproven snes manual at least, but like 2046 or something
some believe it's so they make it that classic doom's earth is the same as eternal's which, like i said in a previous post and so many others, has a lot of elephants in the room and weird things to consider
because it means hell invaded earth twice and i think d2's intermission texts already made a case of what remained of the human population leaving in ships while doomguy had to take care of the situation on earth
people expected a multiverse with different earths because it'd probably be a safer choice that trying to put these earths together
specially if the goal of the lore it to "make it in favor of how a fan would do it" when we can easily look at the years of wads and realm667 assets to see how fans would imagine the expanded setting
it'd be so much easier to go "this is our own interpretation of doom" or something instead of labelling it as "THE doom universe"
but again, if there's something i'm missing here do tell me about it
because at the same time, i still feel like standing by what i keep saying
