The lack of conditioning and muscle awareness makes it difficult for athletes to execute. You know what I mean the athlete whose pike faces downward, has a huge gap between their arms and legs, and whose feet barely make it off the ground. ⠀ ⠀ Lets focus on changing that. To help improve your athlete's pike work on lower abs. A great deal of the execution of pike jumps is done in the lower abs. If you want to improve your athlete's pike jump focus on their lower abs and back muscles. ⠀ ⠀ Not sure where to start?⠀ Drill No. 1 - Hollow body holds, proper form allows focus on the rotation of the hips.⠀ Drill No. 2 - Superman, strengthens the lower back. Helps to balance body.⠀ Drill No. 3 - Laying leg lifts, once you have hollow body work on building strength⠀ Drill No. 4 - Back extension, strengthens the lower back. Helps to balance body. ⠀ Drill No. 5 - Laying toe touch, teaches athletes to go through hollow and pike perpendicular to the ground. For some it may have been a tuck jump, others a spread eagle, and some a toe touch that looked like a spread eagle. What's the one thing you thought as you pushed off the ground? ... Are my feet going to make it back to the ground before my bottom hits it? Yep ... if you were one of the unlucky ones they didn't. Or maybe you liked to drop down to your ankles (I won't name any of my "collegiate" cheerleaders, you all know who you are, lol). ⠀ ⠀ Tuck jumps are a great way to get over that fear of your feet not making it to the ground. After learning the pencil jump - pushing off your toes, lifting with your arms, and absorbing when you land; you can move on to your tuck jumps. They will help you learn to rotate your hips. Simple but powerful. ⠀ ⠀ See tuck jumps can be used to work on jumps, tumbling and inverted stunts. They help teach timing, muscle awareness, and spatial awareness. For coaches it shows who may be lacking the confidence to fully rotate their hips.
