SHINee is Back… a group where four gathers to become five.

SHINee is back, a group we are glad to see because it has been years. Their flavor in music has deepened and their attitude is more independent and confident. A group where four gathers to draw a picture of five. It’s an absolutely wonderful return.

SHINee (Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, Taemin) held an online press conference to celebrate their new album ahead of the release of their 7th full-length album ‘Don’t Call Me’ at 6 pm on the 22nd. ‘Don’t Call Me’ is their new album in two and a half years since their 6th album ‘The Story of Light Epilogue’ in September 2018. It has a total of 9 tracks including ‘Don’t Call Me’, which is the name of the album as well as the name of the title song. The genre is more colorful as it’s a full-length album and the musicality of the members is riper as their accumulated years.

This album has a theme of not defining SHINee with a stereotyped view. It contains another music color of SHINee which has been transforming again and again. In regards to this, Onew said “We thought of a variety of genres and worked with new people. We tried to show a lot of new sides of SHINee”. Minho revealed that he prepared the album in a combative spirit and showed his anticipation saying “It’s fun because it’s been a long time since our members gathered together to promote. I think we will be able to show SHINee’s unique color and different sides”. Key also added his thoughts, “It is an album that we could put in as much as the time we had to think about”  

The title track ‘Don’t Call Me’ is SHINee’s first hip hop dance song. The main character, betrayed by love, expresses the lyrics of warning to the other person with hysterical feelings. Their performance of intense vocals with advanced choreography to intense beats shows their 13 years of experience. Key said “We haven’t done hysterical lyrics before and we challenged ourselves thinking that we cannot be without this level of change. When I listened to ‘Don’t Call Me’, I felt like I had a sudden hook while preparing the album with a jab”. Taemin, the main dancer, adds an explanation about the performance saying “You will be able to meet a strong version of SHINee through ‘Don’t Call Me'. I thought it was the hardest as it had so many movements but we practiced the most number of times (with this) too”.

In particular, this album featured several Korean and foreign musicians including the hitmaker Yoo Young-jin and KENZIE, a famous U.S. hip-hop producer Dem Jointz, the top producing team Moonshine, rapper Coogie, and Woodie Gochild. As such, it is fun to listen to as it includes various genres like medium tempo R&B, future sound dance, pop of energetic vibe, dance-pop, reggae genre dance, R&B pop of romantic mood, and slow tempo pop ballad. Instead of joining in writing the lyrics and compositions, the members drew the most ideal picture on the foundation drawn by the producers. It is an album of high quality with harmonious positioning.
