He came to power at the end of the Year of the Four Emperors, a time of great instability and upheaval for the empire; a commoner, he proved that an emperor was not necessarily born but made, through strength of arms. Having built his reputation on blood - he participated in the Roman invasion of Britain and brutally crushed a Jewish revolt - he ruled peacefully, ordering many construction projects, including the Colosseum. He founded the Flavian Dynasty, which ruled Rome for the next 27 years.
