~ The Cornhill Magazine, January 1922
History Geek Note: have you ever wondered why old pictures show the chairs and sofas covered in doilies? No? OK, it’s just me….anyway the reason is that Macassar Oil and similar hair “treatments” were greasy and would stain the furniture. It was easier to wash a doily covered in hair oil then it was to get the stain out of the back of the chair, so ladies began covering everything with doilies, also called “antimacassars’. Now you know. Don’t you feel better? I know I do.
Three more png doilies!
Tried blocking doilies using liquid starch instead of a spray. These doilies were wet finished by dipping in some mildly hot liquid starch mixture & leaving to soak a bit to ensure the starch permeated the fibers. Then I spent an hour pinning them down, ensuring all the details were stretched & secured. Hopefully I’ll get some nice consistent stiffness with the liquid starch dipping without having to involve an iron which would otherwise flatten the textural details.

❣️Commission Post❣️
Hiii everyone my name is Ivy and I make tatted doilies on commission!
I am currently only working gig jobs and tend to make about $65 a week which mostly goes towards taxes and groceries. Unfortunately our power bill is crazy rn due to the heat (our house is old and barely insulated to boot) and my sister is already working two jobs.
I don't expect commissions to make up the gap but my ideal monthly goal is $500 so I can go back to paying my sister for utilities.
The pictures above are some examples of my work, and I'm also happy to work from a pattern of your choice!
DMs are my preferred method of contact but you can also email me at [email protected]!
Thank youuuuuuu
