When I first thought about taking my dog swimming, I assumed he’d naturally know what to do. That wasn’t the case. The first time we approached the water, he hesitated, and I realized building confidence would take patience, not pressure. I started by letting him explore shallow water at his own pace, staying close so he felt safe and supported.

Positive reinforcement became my go-to approach. Every small win getting his paws wet, taking a few paddles, or staying calm earned praise and encouragement. I kept our early swim sessions short, ending them before he got tired or overwhelmed, which helped him associate water with positive experiences instead of stress.

As his confidence grew, I became more mindful of potential risks. Not all water is safe, and I learned to watch for strong currents, uneven footing, cold temperatures, and hidden obstacles. Choosing calm, familiar locations made a big difference, especially while he was still learning.
