Ever wonder why your dog doesn't listen in public? Your dog isn’t being stubborn. They’re not suddenly developing selective hearing. They’re not plotting against you the moment you step outside. What’s actually happening is simple: your dog was trained in one environment, and you’re expecting them to perform in a completely different one.

Dogs don’t generalize well. Humans do. That mismatch is the entire problem.

At home, your dog knows the routine, the smells, the sounds, the expectations. Outside? It’s a sensory rave. New dogs, new people, squirrels doing acrobatics, wind carrying 47 different scents, and a leaf that might be dangerous. Your dog’s brain is basically buffering.

Why “Sit” Indoors ≠ “Sit” Outdoors

Generalization is the ability to take a skill learned in one context and apply it in another. Humans do this automatically. Dogs… absolutely do not.

If your dog learned sit in the kitchen, that means they know how to sit in the kitchen. Not at the park. Not at the vet. Not when a skateboarder flies by like a caffeinated hummingbird.

This is why your dog seems like a genius indoors and a gremlin outdoors.

How to Fix It (Without Losing Your Mind)

Train in layers — Start inside → yard → quiet street → busier street → park. Each new environment is a “level up,” not a test.

Lower the difficulty — If your dog can hold a 20‑second sit at home, expect maybe 3 seconds outside. That’s normal.

Use higher‑value rewards — Indoors? Kibble works. Outdoors? Break out the chicken, cheese, or whatever makes your dog’s soul ascend.

Short sessions — Five minutes outside is better than thirty minutes of frustration.

Celebrate tiny wins — One second of eye contact in a distracting environment is a victory. Treat it like one.

I love the difference between dog and cat rescue stories. Dog owners will be like oh I prepped for months and applied and had a home check then did a foster to adopt trial period and then the rescue chose me!
