We all set goals or have dreams we want to realize at a certain point in our lives. Just like a baby, who learns to crawl first before standing and eventually walking.
Doel or Goal is a broad word ... I will expound on this subject another time. For now, I will discuss what I’ve learned in my cognitive therapy.
~ I still remember my first ambition ... a FLIGHT STEWARDESS or Flight Attendant. Ever since my first airplane ride (when I was about 7 or 8 years old) I cannot stop thinking about it. ~
When setting goals you look forward. It arises from a wish, an idea or an intention.
It is important because it...
prompts you to take action
Goals can be short-term like cycling, doing the laundry, cooking, buying something for a friend or just having a nice evening.
Write short-term goals on a “To-do list” and add to each goal how, where, when and with whom.
Then you have a concrete promise to yourself.
Cross out the goals you have achieved. Shift goals you haven't accomplished yet.
When you think consciously what you want to do in a year or 5 years or further away. These are long-term dreams. In my collage, you can see that I want to go to the Arctic Circle and cruising again.
You can set short-term or long-term goals.
Brain injury can make it difficult for you to set goals and it affects your daily life. Possible causes are:
You have few thoughts or no ideas that comes to your mind.
You forget what your goals are because of memory problems.
You have a lot of ideas, maybe too many.
You have trouble adjusting your goals.
You struggle with your limitations.
How does this affect your daily life?
It’s not easy, but I learned to prioritize what is important.
What do you want to do differently?
I have many goals short term and long term. I’m taking my time to consider all the possibilities and create opportunities for myself as to what I can do.
One thing is sure, I know what I want in life. I love my life and I’m working towards my GOALS.
