Andre the Giant film review
So I just finished watching the HBO documentary Andre the Giant...
Andre the Giant is a documentary film chronicling the life and career of the films namesake, from his time growing up in France, his early years in the wrestling business, his rise to super-stardom, up until his untimely passing.
A solid film. A very interesting look into the life and career of one of the greatest wrestlers to ever live...
Good editing, very fascinating interviews and perspectives, good soundtrack, great use of archival footage (some interesting information and footage that I didn't know or hadn't seen before), etc.
The examination of Andre's later years, when his health was failing and he was close to death's door, was heart breaking. It makes me think what he could have contributed to wrestling had he gotten the necessasry surgery earlier and been able to live longer.
Though I did find that they spent a little too much time on the rise of Vince and his den of musclely men. Like, I get that explaining the death of the territories and Vince taking the WWE national is important for setting up Wrestlemania 3, but any fan watching this doesn't need that recap. The director could have spent more time examining Andre and his life during Vince's takeover.
Further, in terms of filmmaking, it was about on par with other WWE documentaries. I was expecting a little more since this was an HBO production. I expected the director to take this in more interesting places. It was effective and well done, but nothing I haven't seen before.
Overall, this was a pretty good documentary about a pop culture icon and living legend in professional wrestling. A story told with class. Worth a watch.
