Whumptober #23: ICU | Intubation

Hospital AU where the doctors have to work on one of their own is *chefs kiss*

(Surro has been watching ER, and has fallen in love with John Carter. Do what you will with that information, I just wanted to tell someone.)

It’s the pure organised chaos that surrounds it -  where everyone is on their own personal mission to be the one to save the whumpee, while simultaneously helping each other. They don’t need to ask for tools, they’re just given them as they instruct others on what to do. Blood is being pushed through an IV as the whumpee’s pupil reactions are tested, and their temperature is taken. Bandages and gauze pads are flying everywhere in a flurry of madness as anyone who enters the area gets covered in the whumpees blood. There's no room for ego; only connection born from worry.

When the decision is made to intubate, the doctor's hands shake. They struggle to get the tube in, whispering apologies to a whumpee who's not lucid enough to hear them. 

When it’s time to move, everyone knows to get the fuck out of the way, if the faces of the attending doctors are anything to go by. 

Maybe one doctor demands to be the one performing the whumpees complicated surgery, and despite how long/difficult it is, they also sit with them in recovery before they're taken to the ICU. Everyone knows better than to challenge this. 

The whumpee doesn’t have to worry about visitors as they have a steady swarm of them across the coming days. People have taken to having their lunch in the same room as the whumpee - after all it’s quiet and it ensures someone is looking after them. 

Maybe when they decide to wake the whumpee up, everyone fights to be in the room. Maybe they literally have to draw straws to be the person in there with them. They could even play rock-paper scissors. (They don’t want too many people there, in case it overwhelms the whumpee.)
