ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Her eyes darted around the room until they settled on a familiar shape; the dark figure of a young man rising out of his own cot.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โWho? the figure shook his head, and a chuckle drifted the distance between them. โNever heard of her. You know, I never know whether to envy your dreams or not. Sometimes, it seems you live a second life.โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย The air filled with the sound of a flint striking steel; for a moment sparks danced in the air like midsummer pixies. They quickly disappeared, replaced by the glow of an oil lamp softly illuminating the room; the old cellar she shared with her friendโฆ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โโฆTy?โ she said softly.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โNo matter. I was planning to get up in another couple of hours anyway.โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โOh, ha-ha.โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย The cellar was the only habitable section that remained of Prismโs family home. Beyond the door at the top of the stairs stood a burned skeleton of a once proud dwelling. When she was little, a plague had swept through the region, leaving Prism as the only survivor of her household โ one of only a handful of people to have survived the deadly disease. And, as with all cases of the plague, the house had been razed to the ground in an effort to control the threat. After running away from the local orphanage, Prism had found herself on the streets โ not and easy life for a girl cursed by a pockmarked face.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โPox-ridden and pale. Canโt even use yer as a chambermaid, let alone a whore,โ the madam of the cityโs worst brothel had once told her. Prism shuddered at the memory.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โWhat were you dreaming about anyway, Pris?โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Prism sat up, frowning as she noticed her nightshirt soaked in sweat. โI think, I was in some sort of room, a court, or maybe a nave or somethingโฆ Doesnโt matter. Anyway, this woman was behind me, flowing black hair and wearing some kind of gown, white, I thinkโฆโ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โSounds like my kind of dream, so far. So, what happened to you and this raven-haired beauty?โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โBehave yourself,โ Prism warned, throwing her pillow across the room. Ty ducked and laughed heartily. โAs I was saying, I was protecting her for some reason, and there were these two guards, and...โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โWell, we both know where the guards came from, donโt we?โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Prism fell silent for a moment as a dam burst, flooding her mind with memories of the previous night. They had been celebrating their latest score in the Stalk and Bushell โ celebrating a little too wellโฆ
Prism groaned.
โYouโve just remembered climbing on the bar, havenโt you?โ Ty asked, almost too gently.
Prism drew in a breath through clenched teeth. โNo, itโs the bit where I kicked the guardsman in the face when he tried to pull me down.
โYeap. And thatโs when I had to step in.โ
โWell at least your time in the army paid off.โ
โProbably, but merchants donโt tend to hire mercenaries with a reputation for getting into drunken brawls, do they?โ
โSorry, Ty. I guess weโd better lay low for a while.โ
Yeah, but we canโt exactly stay in here for days on end, can we? And the โBushellโs out โ I think we owe Old Marcus a few Nobles for damages caused.โ
Prism felt herself turning red and wondered if the glow was as bright as Tyโs lamp. โMaybe we should get out of town for a bit,โ she said thoughtfully.
โWhat about the castle job?โ
โYouโre joking. Please tell me youโre joking.โ
โWhy not? Itโs only a couple of days away from here, for a start. And, even better, itโs a ruin nobodyโs touched since the plague.โ
โWell, for a start,โ Prism said, mocking her friendโs words. โIโve heard that a wolfshead called Bargle holed himself up there, and heโs supposed to be a renegade wizard or something. And thatโs why nobodyโs ever looted the place. Heard heโs got a gang of Orcs with him tooโฆโ
ย โAnd I heard Brankaโs gang made a pretty penny from that ruined abbey up near Valeport.โ
โDid you also hear three of Brankaโs men didnโt come back?โ
โOh cโmon, Pris. Stop being a molly! Besides, have you got a better idea?โ
โWe could go to Valeport ourselves, plenty of merchants off loading and onboarding cargo โ if you canโt get work as a mercenary, I could always get us into a warehouse - make a few crowns from the old five-finger discount.โ
โAfter last time? No thanks. Besides, Valeport is twenty leagues away โ do you want to spend the best part of a week walking?โ

๏ธถ๊ฆ๊ทโง๊ท๊ฆ๏ธถย
Every night since heโd been bitten, Cassian dreamt of gnashing teeth.ย
He dreamt of one set of teeth in particular.ย
It was always his teeth. Strahdโs teeth. Strahdโs clawed hands lifting him up, wrenching Cassianโs hair to yank his head to the side. Strahdโs jaws opening like the mouth of a serpent.ย
It was the paralysis heโd felt as Strahd gripped Cassian and bit into him harshly. It was the way he had twitched, helpless and limp, as Strahd gulped down mouthful after hungry mouthful of fresh hot blood.ย
The helplessness haunted him. It was the way Strahd had seemed to hypnotize him, to petrify his body frozen so he couldnโt resist. The way Strahd did it again and again in Cassianโs dreams. Cassian would die, and the dream would restart. Strahd would be biting him again.ย
Why hadnโt he drained him completely?ย
In his dreams, he always did. Strahd always drained him dry, or he must have, for Cassian could never remember the ending. Heโd always just wake up with a jolt of panic, soaked in his own sweat.ย
This went on for a few days, as the bitemark began to close over. The relentless nightmares kept him from any meaningful rest.ย
On the nth loop, the dream started to twist itself. It was Strahd binding him so he definitely couldnโt fight back. Then, Strahd poisoning his mind to make Cassian bare his neck and beg for Strahd to bite him. Cassian didnโt want it, he was terrified, but whatever Strahd had done to his mind was so convincing he begged it and meant it and it made him want to keel over and retch onto the floor.ย
Cassian had gone this long without being bitten by a vampire, at least, until a couple of days ago. Lasted a whole twenty five years. Many of those years spent hunting these things and not a single bite, though he couldnโt say he didnโt get scraped up. Hazard of the job.ย
Of course it would be Strahd to break his lucky streakโself proclaimed all-powerful god being of this realm or whatever he said he was. He was an asshole, a dictator, a smug piece of shit bastard, Cassian thought.ย
But now Cassian knew just what it felt like to be bitten into like a piece of meat. To have his life force sucked out with gusto, with vigor. He got to relive it over and over in his dreams until he panicked himself awake.ย
๏ธถ๊ฆ๊ทโง๊ท๊ฆ๏ธถย
Cassian didn't know what time it was when his eyes snapped open. His heart still pounded in his chest. The inside of the old church was still dark. He peered over the shadowed outlines of cots and makeshift camp supplies. The other travelers were obscure sleeping lumps in the darkness.ย
Cassianโs vision was still thick with sleep when he spotted a blurred figure across the room.ย
A moment passed, his eyes focused, and then his blood fucking froze.ย
It was him.ย
Strahd sat across from him on one of the refurbished church pews. He smiled wickedly, showing his fangs. Around him, the other travelers of Cassianโs party slept soundly, completely oblivious to his presence.ย
Without thinking, Cassian scrambled back on his cot, trying to huddle himself in and press his back into the wall, as if making himself smaller would make him disappear. As if pressing his back into the bricks hard enough would let him sink right through them.ย
This had to be another dream.ย
"Go ahead and call out for help, if you like," Strahd said very softly, like a bat's wings on the night. Strahd knew full well Cassian's throat was still too damaged from the bite to make enough noise to wake anyone up. He just wanted to see Cassian squirm.
Cassian could feel his chest shaking now. Full body tremors. This couldnโt be happening. His throat clenched up painfully. Strahd was right. Heโd had so little time to recover since Strahd had bitten his neck so hard itโd nearly killed him. There was no way heโd be able to scream.ย
โYouโreโ you're notโ real,โ Cassian hissed desperately, eyes wide, his voice still hoarse and strained. It hurt, but he was lucky he could make any sound at all, considering the gaping holes in his neck had just barely begun to heal.
"I'm not?" Strahd said, with feigned surprise. He stood up and glided silently, his feet hovering an inch off the dusty cobblestone.ย
Cassian was petrified with fear as Strahd floated towards him like an ominous specter. He could feel his breath quickening, until it took on a panicked, stuttering shape.ย
โNoโ!โ he tried to cry out, but his words were stifled once again by his shredded throat.ย
โDontโ!โ It was hoarse and painful. Hardly above a whisper. Pathetic.ย
Strahd reached out one hand, blackened claws still stained with what could still be Cassian's dried blood, and gently stroked Cassian's cheek. Amusement danced in his eyes.
Oh god, the vampire was touching his faceโ but gently? Like he was some small, fragile animal.ย
Cassian finally managed to react and tried to duck away from the vampireโs hand.ย
โDonโt fucking touch me!โ Cassian hissed. Heโd wanted to sound intimidating, wanted to sound firm and stern and unshaken. Instead, it was another frantic, hoarse whisper.
Strahd let out a low, smoky laugh.ย
"You seem to be a bit confused, still, about who is giving whom commands here." Strahd took Cassian's chin between two fingers and forced the human's gaze into his face, to make eye contact.ย
"Look at me, now."
Cassian didn't have a choice. His limbs felt like they were encased in iceโ frozen and heavy and unmovable. Yet the vampire lord seemed to maneuver him with alarming ease, gently tilting his chin up as though it weighed no more than a feather, as though his whole body wasnโt full of thick, viscous liquid-lead.ย
Cassian trembled as he gazed up into the vampire's face. He was fucking terrifying. All teethโ all teeth that Cassian had seenโhad feltโ in action.ย
โWh-what do you want?โ Cassian cursed the burning in his throat and the way his voice shook, that terrified whisper he was forced to retain. No way to call for help. No way to alert the others.ย
Maybe if he could throw something? If he could lug something far enough as to hit one of the sleeping figuresโ but any brilliant planning abilities were now buried deep deep beneath the surface of his mind, sunken beneath hundreds of pounds of water pressure.
Strahd's eyes flared with the full force of his hypnotizing power, locking Cassian in his psychic grip. Easy.ย
All of a sudden, as quickly as that piercing ice had overtaken him, Cassian was struck with something warm.ย
Warm and hazy and urgent, the feeling pulled at his mind and twisted the corners of his vision like a sultry, persuasive vignette, until it was overflowing his every sense like a shot of heroin and had narrowed the whole world down to Him.ย
To Lord Strahd.ย
And he was terrifying and magnificent.
Strahd put one hand to his lips. "Shh. Quiet now. Let's move outside so we don't wake your friends."ย
Strahdโs voice warped in Cassianโs ears, as though he were speaking right through his very skull. As if Strahd had just said the most incredible, desirable thing in the world, and just hearing it made Cassianโs stomach lurch and his heart race to obey. It was beautiful and nauseating.ย
This was worse than the dreams, some deep part of Cassian knew.
But that part certainly wasnโt at the wheel right now. His eyes only saw Strahd. He fell silent. Nothing pleased Cassian more at that very moment than to fall silent. Because Strahd had ordered it so.ย
Strahd released Cassianโs face and motioned for him to follow, gliding silently out the door and into the cool night air.
Cassian followed Strahd like an equally haunted specter, eyes hazy and reverent the whole time, as he followed obediently, silently behind him.
Strahd led Cassian out into the darkness of the night, where his fiendish nightmare waited outside the church, its mane and tail blazing with fire that dimly lit its surroundings and cast jumping shadows all around. It pawed at the ground and let out a soft nicker as Strahd drew close.ย
"Good girl," he said, petting its nose. Strahd put one boot in a stirrup and swung up into the saddle.
All of a sudden, five vampire spawn crawled out of the shadows, almost invisible except for their glowing red eyes. They stalked towards Cassian with hungry looks.
This next part wasn't strictly necessary, but Strahd thought it would be amusing to make Cassian choose between being menaced by spawn or willingly getting up into the saddle with him. Strahd controlled them all, of course, every vampire in Barovia was under his spell. He just wanted to see what Cassian would do.ย
The spawn crouched nearby, letting out soft, unnerving hisses and slowly drawing nearer to Cassian with no expression on their dead, emotionless faces.
Strahd released his charm on Cassian.ย
As quickly as it came, the spell lifted, and Cassian was struck with horror as he took in his situation.ย
"We're going to Castle Ravenloft," Strahd said matter-of-factly. "There is enough room in this saddle for you to ride with me, if you wish."
Cassian staggered back, but the growling creatures behind him sent him whirling the other direction. He looked back and forth. He screamed for help, but once again no sound came out. Just an awful shredding feeling in the back of his throat. He was fucked.ย
Strahdโs terms were clear. Get terrorized by these feral vampires or get on that freaky horse with him.ย
To Castle Ravenloft.
Heโd been there once before. Had seen what he was sure was only a tiny fraction of the bloodthirst and cruelty that took place in that awful castle. He could only imagine what went on behind closed doors. He preferred not to at all.ย
Cassian found himself backing away from the approaching prowling things anyway. Towards Strahd and that fucking demon horse.ย
โPlease donโt take me,โ he whispered desperately, as he was forced to draw closer to the vampire lord and his hellbeast. The spawn circled him. Cassian drew his silver blade, pointing it this way and that, trying to hold it up to keep the vampire spawn from getting at him as they prowled and snapped.
"This is not a negotiation," came Strahdโs voice from above.ย
Strahd held a hand down, extended for Cassian to take to climb up. Behind him, ominous green light danced in the air as the midnight ghost parade from the church graveyard began. Dozens of figures started spawning from the ground and shambling mindlessly towards the castle. The ones Strahd had bragged about when theyโd first met, ghosts of the ones whoโd opposed him and whose lives heโd snuffed out.
"I have half a mind to send you all to join them tonight, but luckily for you, you're all much more interesting alive. For now. Maybe I'll take you all one by one. That dusk elf woman would be next for sure. But I'm getting ahead of myself. It's your turn."
Noโ fuck that. There was no way Cassian would just get on that horse after that little power trip of a speech and give Strahd his way.ย
Did Strahd think Cassian was an actual idiot? Did he think Cassian was just gonna get on that horse like some kind of obedient dog and blindly follow him to god knows what painful end? Cassian had cut down hundreds of vampires in his time as a hunter, what was a couple more feral things, right? He swung his blade, trying his best to behead the first one, still weakened by the bite injury and trying not to wince at the way his sore tendons pulled at his shoulder and collarbone.ย
Cassian slashed through one, then two, hoping to make quick work of these creatures and hurry back into the partyโs camp at the old church. He didnโt know what he had done to earn Strahdโs attention, but he assumed it probably had something to do with being more than a little drunk and possibly quite rude at Strahdโs little โdinner party.โย
Oh, and probably for stabbing him through the fucking throat with a silver dagger. Which was what had gotten him bitten in the first place. Okay. Cassian could admit, maybe he hadn't been so smart about his interactions with the man who was supposedly the most powerful being in the entire land.ย
For his best effort, Cassian got his ass kicked handily. There were too many of themโmore and more vampire spawn kept crawling out of the bushes and out of the trees like they were generating on the spot.ย
Strahd watched with amusement as his spawn thrashed Cassian--the human got a few decent hits in, but the vampires in Barovia were far more powerful than the ones Cassian was used to slaying back in his homeland.ย
Cassian bared his teeth as the vampires circled in on him, it was too much, he was too weak from the bite and having his fucking life force drained. He didnโt last long standing.ย
Eventually, one of them knocked the knife out of his hand and the rest descended on him to nip at him with their teeth and claws. With his only weapon gone, he knew he was truly fucked.
Cassian was tackled to the ground. He kicked and thrashed as the hoard of vampire spawn pounced on him, but his weak protests were no match for their gnashing teeth. Like a swarm of piranha, they tore at his flesh and left him bloody and scraped, teeth marks and jagged claws leaving streaks of blood across his face, arms, chest and already-injured neck. He tried to scream for the others, one last ditch effort. Curse his fucked out voice. Curse the monster that had reduced him to this.ย
The hoard of spawn were obviously not going all out--possibly at the command of their master, to avoid killing him. They withdrew when Cassian was left battered and bruised on the ground.
Strahd got down from his nightmare and walked over to Cassian, taking proud, smug strides until Strahdโs boots filled his vision. From the ground, Cassian gave a weak cough, groaning in pain.
Truth be told, that was exactly what Strahd had wanted to see. So many people would have just been cowed and gotten on the horse--which was boring. Strahd liked targets that needed to be broken, like wild horses to tame.
Strahd grabbed Cassian by the arm, lifted him to his feet, and dragged him over towards the horse.
Oh god Cassian was so fucked. He was being dragged so easily, like he was a limp rag doll.ย
โLet me go!โ He tried to cry out. Hoarse whispers came instead.ย
He tried to push away from Strahd but found his arms had hardly any strength in them anymore, having used the last bits of his energy and adrenaline to fight the hoard of spawn and fail so miserably. It was humiliating.
Fuckfuckfuckโ Cassian was being hauled up to that fiery horseโ was being thrown into the back of it like he was mere luggage.ย
Cassian screamed for help. Screamed his already injured throat raw, until it burned like fire and then some, as though itโd been stripped bare and whipped by his own hoarse screams.ย
And to no end. Nobody heard him. Nobody would be coming.
Strahd hefted Cassian up into the saddle, then got on behind him, sandwiching the human between Strahd's chest and the horse's fiery mane. It radiated heat, but did not burn him.ย
ย "Let's be off, then," Strahd said with a wicked grin.ย
The nightmare galloped off into the misty night, its fiery mane casting distorted shadows on all it passed.

Summary:
You are a divine gift, Veltariel. You are a blessing made flesh. In you are the eyes of Tyrโs justice made manifest.
This is neither Malevirโs true name nor his true purpose. Today is the day he proves it.
[ID - a decorative divider]
You are a divine gift, Veltariel. You are a blessing made flesh. In you are the eyes of Tyrโs justice made manifest.
Bloody footsteps marked Malevirโs passage down the centre of the nave. Fading screams lingered in the air, caught in the dark of the clerestory above. Ahead, the dusk light fell blue and purple through the stained glass, bathing the cowering figures of his parents where they huddled before the altar.
โThatโs enough, Veltariel!โ his father cried.
Malevir continued to walk. Feathers shed in his wake, crumbling to red ashes as they drifted to the floor. Not enough left of his wings to fly now, but at least they were unbound.
โPut down the knife, darling.โ His motherโs voice rang out, shaking but as clear as ever it sounded from the pulpit. Words were all she had. Tyr had never seen fit to grant her or any other of this church more than that. โPlease, just put it down.โ
The dead and the dying lay broken behind him, Tyrโs guilty faithful, punished as their own doctrine commanded. That many were ignorant of the shape of their guilt troubled him notโthe mercy of ignorance was a mercy none had ever granted him. They had plucked his feathers for good fortune; laid hands upon him in search of Tyrโs blessings; stripped him bare before a crowd so that his many eyes could watch over the justice delivered unto others.
Now justice was come among them, and it was not Tyrโs hand that would deliver it, but his.

Summary: There are a great many things that contrast Arazai from his half-sister Naadja. One such trait being his common sense. He staunchly refuses to participate in the orgies she so brazenly bares herself in, but for once he decides to see what all the fuss is about. This is decidedly, a terrible mistake.

1110 words || a D&D character fic in the Curse of Strahd setting
Wrote this as a quick exercise in gore and horror and figuring out how Beauโs werewolf transformation would work :3
Beauregard Deverell knew everything there was to know about werewolves. She had spent the better part of her younger years reading every book and tome that she could get her hands on, and listening to the stories of the elder Dawnstriders as they told tale of their most dangerous hunts. She had put her knowledge into practice and honed it further when she herself finally began to face the beasts. She knew that they transformed on the full moon, but that some had some ability to shift at willโwhile others could become monstrous if one simply knew how to push their emotions just the right way. She knew how they hunted, how they fought, how they died. She knew that the affliction was a curse, one that ate at the minds of its victims, turning them into nothing more than animals. It was a curse that turned your nicest neighbor into a predator that cared for nothing more than her next meal. Most of all, she knew that she had to be extremely careful every time set out to hunt her quarry, because that monstrous curse could be spread by nothing more than the meeting of fangs and flesh. One bite was all it took.
But she had slipped up. The werewolf she had been sent to eliminate was quicker, slippier than Beau had expected, and in the fray, she was bitten and the monster got away.
The law of the Dawnstriders dictated that a hunter turned was to strike themselves down, to fall upon their own blade before they could truly become monsters themselves. In this, Beauregard had failed. In this, she had broken her Oath. But with the picture of her beautiful wife and her beloved son burning in her mind, she could not pierce the dagger through her own heart.
Now, as the full moon hung in the sky like some mockery, she wished more than anything that she had been able to follow through.
The fever was the worst part. A heat like hellfire burned through every fiber of her being, every nerve electric with pain that pulsed in waves from the ugly gaping bite mark ripped into her shoulder. The hard packed basement floor was utterly soaked in the sweat that continued to run in rivulets down her oversensitive skin. She curled in on herself, shivering despite the warmth that flooded her body. Deliriously, she wished that she would simply fizzle out, if only for the godsforsaken fever to end. For hours she quivered through delirium with not a second of reprieve.
Pain lanced suddenly white hot through the bite, forcing Beauโs muscles to tense to stony rigidity in response. Something half a cry and half a growl choked itself out of lips curled into a pained snarl, reverberating through the cobweb and dust encrusted room like an earthquake. Bile burned at the back of her throat as it felt like the werewolfโs rabid fangs were rending her flesh once again. She twisted, yanking at the linen fabric of her shirt and ripping it off and away from the inflamed and oozing punctures. Tears stung her eyes as she tried to gather enough wherewithal to inspect the wound, but her sight turned blurry as her whole body arched against a new wave of pain.
Beauโs skin felt horribly tight and maddeningly itchy. She could feel every bone begin to ache and shift and stretch in agonizing ways, stretching her skin far further than it was ever meant to stretch. Her jaws fell open in a blood-curdling wail as her nails dug into her own skin, drawing blood and then digging deeper still. She felt suddenly as if she needed to escape, somehow, and the itch and burn across her body quickly outweighed all sense. She barely noticed the rapid curling of nails into claws as she viciously tore into herself, pulling at her own flesh and sinew as if it were nothing more than paper. Blood spattered across the floor in a sickening squelch as deep gashes tore across her bodyโbut it was not muscle and fat that hid underneath. No, with each excruciating rip of Beauโs skin, each layer discarded upon the ground, bloodstained fur broke free beneath the shreds. Even before she could reach her back, her spine swelled upward in an unnatural and violent curve, splitting the flesh until her new form could break free with a stomach-churning crack. It was impossible to breathe through the overpoweringly thick scent of rot and iron hung in the air.
Desperately clinging to consciousness, Beauregard tried to stand, tried to curl away from the mind-numbing pain, but the ground had become slick with her own sweat and blood, and her body was no longer listening to rational thoughtโor really much at all. She fell forward onto her hands and knees, watching in mingled awe and horror as her fingers began to stretch and curl into something larger and more beastly. Fully formed, wicked claws gleamed in the low lantern light, stained crimson in her own blood. She watched as her flesh began to sizzle and burn, the silver of her wedding ring melting her flesh like acid. A garbled cry tore its way free of her chest as she scratched at her handโher pawโto rip the ring free of its home. Faintly, she recalled promising Brandi that it would never leave her finger, and her chest ached as though with the pain of a dagger driven through her still-beating heart.
The ring fell with a soft clink against the cellar floor, settling in the gory mess of shredded flesh and sticky scarlet blood. She barely had time to process the sight before she was collapsing once again into the dirt, her limbs contorting and stretching to better fit the monster that was rapidly fighting its way free of her broken form. Her eyes rolled back into her head, mottled oaken brown shifting into a sharp and unsettling gold that gleamed in the darkness like torchlight.
A mind-splitting headache hit her like the swing of a hammer as even her skull began to mold itself into something beastly, bursting through her face as her jaw warped into a massive maw. Sickly pink foam frothed at her lips, dripping onto the ground. Her gums ached as her teeth too began to change, filing into dagger sharp fangs that ached to sink into something, anything. Tears fell freely now, a result of her pain, but also of her regret, of her agonizing shame. She felt utterly, nauseated with agony and fever and guilt and shame and hungerโ
And then everything faded into a vast, comforting expanse of nothing.
