The Trick Is A Treat: “Boys Who Tricked Me” Is A Must See: Only 3 MORE SHOWS LEFT!
Funny, fun, irreverent, young, relateable, and painfully truthful all describe Ben Bonnema's full length musical "Boys Who Tricked Me" currently playing at Musical Theatre Factory (but not for long... ONLY TWO MORE SHOWS BEFORE IT CLOSES). The show is refreshingly campy, satirical in a way that is so biting in its truth that it mirrors the real life horrors of modern intimacy so accurately you sometimes want to wince in your seat... and is at the same time soothing with an understanding that we are all not in fact alone in the embarrassment, disgrace, and sometimes shame at our own actions inside of our quest for love. Encased as a slumber party that is being thrown by the actors Jermaine Brown Jr., Remy Germinario, CJ Pawlikoski, that the audience is magically apart of (literally you can come in pajamas, take off your shoes, etc...) fully equipped with blankets, pillows, seating that is literally home furnishings... the interactive show breeds the sentiment that you are in fact camping out in the confines of a teenage mentalitied, yet all too grown intimate gathering with friends. All three actors shine for different reasons, but come together collectively to create magical moments... Jermaine's beautiful tenor singing abilities soar, along with his relateable charm and charisma shine from the second the show starts. Remy's witty and intelligent comedic timing, comfort in his character work/choices, and understanding of the material roots him in a place that makes him so enjoyable to watch; and CJ's skilled timing, ability to go from straight man (don't mistake as heterosexual) to comic relief, emotive delivery of both music and scene work (his last scene before the finale is legitimately heartbreaking), along with his biceps, all make for an appealing performance. The music/band is great as well. I found the writing candid, honest, raw, and rooted in much needed dialogue. We live in an era where communication, intimacy, sexuality, and relationship dynamics are changing rapidly in tandem with technology. We are in an era where all generations/age groups are coming of age in a world of transparency that casts new shadows of mystery. I feel that "Boys Who Tricked Me" illustrates the frustrations, beauties, and reality of our times... And who can resist group therapy sessions, games of truth or dare with strangers, and winning free porn (which I did) for playing games based off of Grindr profiles... I'd also like to mention that the show is performed in a real life porn studio. I mean, does it get anymore authentic NYC than that? Catch the last three shows... Go to www.mtf.nyc for tickets!
Join Dj StereOtype and the SubUrban Underground crew for an in depth look at "Motown the Musical" on the heels of the end of its first run on Broadway. Featuring interviews with cast mates, the Tony Award nominated Charl Brown (who plays Smokey Robinson) , Tiffany Howard (Mary Wilson), Bryan Terrel Clark (Marvin Gaye), and Krystal Joy Brown (Diana Ross)... we go behind the curtain a bit to discuss the Motown legacy, race in America, the entertainment industry and the show within itself. With only 16 MORE DAYS left before the show closes, make sure you check it out if you have not already. Motownthemusical.com
