Eric Coulter x Oc
Oc: Alice Murphy
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5 - Part 6 - Part 7 - Part 8 - Part 9 - Part 10 - Part 11
(This gif of Eric and the horse is a blessing)
Alice Murphy had always been a very quiet and chill individual. But the last days had really have been testing her patience.
She had chosen to stay with Tris, Four, Caleb, Marcus and Peter, at least for some time. She was wounded and even if it wasn't a life threatening injury, the risk was still present that it could get infected, she needed medical care. The group had jumped off the train right after they passed the wall and ran to the forest. Alice didn't take part in their bickering, too tired. She leaned against a tree and kept her attention on her surroundings. Even if the serum's effects had dissipated, there were still soldiers loyal to Max and Jeanine. Finally, they decided on their direction. Marcus was adamant on asking for help in Amity, because of his ties with their leader, Johanna. Four didn't seem thrilled to be agreeing with the man but he did anyway. They needed support and rest.
They sent in Marcus first. The rest of the group stood still at the edge of the trees, anxiously waiting. They looked at the tall wood structure in the middle of amity for what seemed like hours before they saw Marcus coming back with a smaller woman. When they approached Alice recognized her from some of the meetings her aunt had had with other leaders. Johanna had always had a strong aura. She was enveloped in multiple layers of orange and yellow clothes her dark hair spread on her shoulders. It wasn't long until the amity leader spotted the group under the trees and even in the growing darkness, her black eyes sparked of recognition. She motioned them to come closer and ushered them in the amity compound. Whithout a word, they all walked inside, thanking the woman with their eyes. She led them up some stairs to what looked like an office, her office. It was cosy, the orange light made everything look warmer. Johanna gestured to them to sit down on the sofas across her table. Alice didn't let herself be asked a second time. Every part of her body ached and all of her energy had been sucked out of her. She could have fallen asleep right then and now.
"So, Marcus told me everything about what was happening in the city...let's just say I'm not surprised.
Johanna sat down and sighed heavily, looking at each member of the group one by one. Her gaze finally landed on Alice, scrutinizing. Like she wanted to see what was in the depth of her soul. But even Alice didn't like to go there, so she was not about to let a stranger, no matter how kind, explore there. She stared directly back at her, even if she realized that she didn't look very discouraging with her head leaned on the sofa, probably blood on her face and very messy hair.
Johanna moved on: "I am not about to engage in a conflict with any other faction, I want amity to stay neutral.
The silence was as heavy as lead.
- Still, I am sympathetic to your cause. The existence of divergent is putting a lot of thing in question, but it's no reason for you to be hunted down. So I am willing to give you shelter. But I do have my conditions. First of all, you surrender your weapons.
- I have to insist on the fact that I am not divergent, chimed in Peter and he took a step towards the amity leader. In fact I didn't even want to come here, I was just trying to...
The look Johanna gave him made him shut his mouth very quick.
- As I was saying...
- We can't give up our weapons, protested Tris. We don't even know when we might need them...
- You won't need them as long as you are in here. In fact you won't need any violence at all. You won't disturb the life of my people in any way, is that understood?
After a moment of silence, Four spoke up:
- Very clear. Thank you Johanna.
- Perfect. Now, you can go down, there is a guest room on your right. We will find you a more appropriate place to stay tomorrow. As for you...Johanna finally turned towards Alice again. Stay here just a minute longer, I will take care of your arm."
The small group exited the office with a last look to the young woman, leaving her and the amity leader alone in the room. The dark skinned woman fumbled for a bit in a wood cabinet. She finally approached the young wounded girl with a box and sat down next to her on the couch.
"The bullet just grazed the skin, nothing too serious...
- We wouldn't want it to get infected, wouldn't we ? said Johanna while getting the makeshift bandaid of her arm.
The skin under it was red and irritated, the piece of blue cloth was dark and wet from the blood coming from the wound. Alice grimaced.
"Don't worry, this will be fixed in no time. It will just sting a bit...
Alice bit her lip, while Johanna applied a disinfectant on her arm. The burning sensation was over soon, followed by the freshness of water and then the softness of gauze.
"Almost done, Johanna said and maneuvered the young woman's arm to be able to wrap the bandage around it.
- Thank you.
- Don't thank me just yet. By letting you stay here I am putting myself and my people in a lot of risks.
- I am aware. But I don't think it will change anything.
- What do you mean ?
- Jeanine won't just stop at Abnegation. And us stopping her once won't change her objective. We were just...a momentary set back.
- Jeanine won't involve Amity. We are neutral ground and pacifists.
- Do you think she cares about that? Alice hissed. You and her have a wildly different notion of peace, Johanna.
The amity leader finished her bandage by a tight knot, thoughtful.
- The facts are facts. I cannot argue on how Jeanine's mind works, only on what I am seeing. And the facts are that she ordered the killing of hundreds of people by other mind controlled people.
- The mind control serum won't work now that most of the dauntless soldiers have deserted.
- But not all of them."
When Johanna said those words, Alice couldn't help but think about Eric. He must have returned to Jeanine. He said he would help from the inside, but she hoped more for him to be safe and careful. For a second the feeling of his lips on hers, the weight of his arms around were brought back. But that fleeting moment disappeared fast and she was brought back to reality.
"I didn't even know divergents were real, whispered Johanna, making Alice jump a little.
She didn't know how to answer.
- You don't seem different at all, yet...now that I know that you are different, I can almost see it...
- I am not a different person. None of us are.
- Maybe not most of them. But some of you...you have had your whole life shaped because of this identity. Do you ever wonder who you might have been without all of this?
Alice stood up without a word. No, no, no, she was not going to think about that, it was not the moment, not the place, there was so much thing to do, she was NOT thinking about that...
- I should go rest, she said a bit too dryly. Thank you for your help.
- Sleep gives the most precious advice"
Eric limped into the the facility where the mind control device had been set up. His knee was hurting like hell, but he made sure not to show even the smallest hint of it on his face. He passed bodies on the floor. he recognized the first of them to be Andrew Prior. The two others were Dauntless guards. He knew them from sight, Carl and Shane. He looked away from the bodies and entered the facility. Dauntless officers and Erudite scientists were scattered around the room, bandaging each other or trying to fix electrical wiring.
Eric recognized Jeanine, standing in the middle of the room. She was staring at the black screens of the monitors. He walked towards her:
"Miss Matthews? Max has sent me to deliver a message.
- What is it? she said softly, not even looking at him.
- We rounded up the Abnegation population. We are still looking for some fugitives, but it won't be long until we find them all.
- It's not as bad as I thought, she muttered, more to herself than to Eric. I can began testing, only if...
She turned around and looked at the man as if she just noticed he was there.
- Have you found it?
Eric motioned to another guard who was following him, holding a heavy golden object. Jeanine's eyes widened as she walked to the guard and took the object from him. The symbols of the five factions were engraved on it, intertwined with other complicated lines.
- Finally...This is the key to our advancement. The key to our peace. The key to eradicate divergents. A job you didn't do as well yourself, Eric.
The man felt a cold shiver run down his spine. Jeanine continued:
- It's true you found a few ones, but not enough evidently. I hope you'll apply yourself better in the future, otherwise I don't know what I'll do with you.
- Yes Ma'am, he said simply.
- The divergent technology will be ready in a few days. You'll use it to find them and bring them back to me, every last one of them, If they're not strong enough, just dispose of them, they won't be of use...
- What will you do with them? He dared to ask.
- Nothing too serious, just a small experiment, she said and put down the mysterious object on a table, her eyes still on it.
- And what if...what if people fight back?
- What people would fight us back? We have turned the story in our favor in the eyes of the other factions, and for the divergents, we are just keeping our community safe...
- People like the dauntless defectors, like Four and like...Alice.
When she heard the name, Jeanine turned around. Her grey eyes were piercing through him, through his soul. She finally said, enunciating every syllabe coldly:
- I want all of the divergents brought back here. No matter who, no matter how. At least for once they can be useful to us."
And with these words, she walked away, the golden object in her arms.
Eric was back on the field again, supervising the evacuation of the imprisoned abnegations. He was standing straight, eyebrows furrowed. Max was talking to another dauntless soldier who was distributing the new arm bands for the soldiers loyal to Max and Jeanine, on which the blue eye of erudite was embroidered. Eric himself was wearing one.
He watched the prisoners being put in rows. They had nothing precious to be stripped of, so they were all piled in large trucks and driven away. It was an understatement to say that he didn't feel good about it. He did everything to avoid looking them in the eyes.
"So, Jeanine is satisfied? Max approached.
- Very. We should be able to use the new tech soon.
- Great. A lot of them escaped today. We have to hunt them down. It's such a shame, tho...
- What ?
- Your student. She was talented...and she knows a lot about us. We'll have to make sure this doesn't impact us in any important way and...not make this mistake again.
Marcus sighed and put a hand on Eric's shoulder, his voice heavy with hidden meanings.
- We may have not have a complete success this time, but we'll reach our goal very soon, wether the other factions like it or not.
He suddenly turned to the Eric, his hand still at the base of his neck.
- You're with us right? I have to know I can count on you, Eric.
The leader's eyes were scrutinizing, examining Eric to his core. And it petrified him more than he wanted to admit.
- Of course, Max. You can always count on me.
- Good. Good...Well I guess you can go rest now and heal that knee. We're gonna need you at the top of your form."
With a last tap on the back, he left Eric alone.
And the young man suddenly felt so much lighter. He turned away fro the rows of prisoners, facing the empty houses.
Well not that empty. He limped between the simple buildings making sure no one was following him. He never liked the Abnegation architecture, no irregular shapes, nowhere to really hide. It felt empty and naked. Maybe it looked too much like himself on the inside right now.
One of the houses was more secluded than the others, the door was looking at the tree line instead of the inside of the small part of the city. With a last look behind him, he opened the door.
The inside was very silent. He could see the millions of particles of dust in the light. The furniture was as simple and lifeless as the exterior of the house. He walked across the kitchen, towards a small flight of stairs leading to a dark basement. When he got to the end of the stairs, his eyes had adjusted to the darkness. He could finally see the small group of people hiding in the corners. There was not a lot of them, the few persons he could get separately or found in the houses. But it was still better than nothing.
"The trucks will be gone soon. I won't be able to stay much longer. As soon as it gets dark you have to get out of here, go in the abandoned part of the city.
- With the factionless? asked a meager voice.
- What's your problem with that? You feed them right? They should be receiving with open arms, he replied irritated.
The silence answered him. Good. There was nothing else for him to do. Nothing else to say. He limped up the stairs.
A few days had passed since Alice and the group had arrived in Amity. So far, the situation had been calm. The amity people had mostly accepted them and they all had been working together near the main building. Alice had changed her black uniform for a warm purple dress, with buttons running in the front. She had found some sort of scarf which she used to held back her hair to stop falling out of her braid.
She was tending to one of the many vegetable gardens on the property. She found the task quite pleasant. She never had the occasion to do really anything else than study and train, so the change was welcome. The ground was rich and moist in this place, the smell was almost too intense at times. While she gardened, she could almost forget what was happening around her, everything.
She stood up, wiping her hands on her dress. Tris and Four were not that far from there, walking hand in hand. She could have almost been jealous of them...she was just a tiny bit. Her and Eric were in a particular situation and had made their choice.
She looked up to the sky. The sun had disappeared behind a thick grey cloud and the wind had picked up, lifting her dress and making her arms shiver. She picked up her bucket and walked to the well. It was in a more secluded area of the Amity property, under what looked like an old bridge.
She was about to pump some water into her bucket, when she heard footsteps behind her. Tris was coming towards her, another bucket in her own hands.
"Water? she asked.
- I'm washing clothes. You?
- Watering the plants."
Almost at the same time she uttered these words, she heard the familiar sound of water drops on the leaves. Alice put down her bucket.
"Guess not."
Tris chuckled and sat down on a piece of concrete, followed by Alice. She glanced at the young woman. Tris and her weren't exactly the closest of friends, but they shared an understanding of each other's situation.
"I like your hair, said finally Alice.
- Oh, thanks, Tris said and touched her head. I...wanted to do something different...
- I get it. Many things have changed in a very short time.
- Yeah...That's not really what I signed up for when coming to dauntless.
- Tell me about it. I was supposed to disappear quietly, not be made public enemy number one.
- What do you mean by disappear ?
- After training, the plan was for me to runaway, live quietly far from the city, where there was no risk for me to be discovered but also by a time where I knew enough in order to survive by myself.
- You seem to have thought about it for a long time.
- Yeah. My grandfather drilled it in me for years.
- But obviously, it didn't really work out.
- As I said before, a lot of things changed. I was very lonely in erudite. By my fault also, I avoided people. But I met you in dauntless, and Christina and Will and...Eric. I didn't want to lose that too.
- What's your deal with Eric? He is working for Jeanine, Alice. He is one of the leaders who led the attack! It was weird before, cause the guy is a jerk, but now?
- I really like you Tris, but sometimes you don't make the effort to look under the surface. It's a lot more complicated than that.
- And do you care to explain ?
- He works from the inside.
- What?
- From here, we are only helping ourselves, Tris. A lot of people need support outside of us.
Tris just looked at her:
- You like him.
- I...do in fact like him, she said and crossed her arms. Is there a problem with that? Or do you think you're the only one who is allowed to get with their superiors?
- No, I don't think that. Jeez calm down. It's just particular seeing the circumstances.
- Well deal with it. I told you what you needed to know about this.
- Didn't know you could get so defensive, muttered Tris.
For a few minutes, the two young woman sat without talking, listening to the sound of the rain falling on the plants. The world was quiet around them, as if for a moment, they had been separated from it. Finally, Tris spoke again:
"I don't know how long we'll last here. I feel like we're just buying time.
- It's not just a feeling. I don't like being here at all, this place is too obvious.
- For the moment we don't have anything else...I'm lost you know. Four is always arguing with Marcus, Caleb doesn't know what to make with himself and I don't even know what Peter is doing here.
- Well I my humble opinion, he is dangerous. I don't know why you kept him around.
- I didn't want to just leave him on the street, I don't know...
- Well you should have.
- Yeah.
- By the way...I never got the time to give you my condolences...for you parents, said Alice.
Her words were a bit clumsy, she wasn't good at this condolence thing, but she still wanted to express how sorry she felt.
- Oh...yeah, thanks, Tris answered softly and ran her hand through her now short hair. I don't really want to think about this right now.
- I get it, I'm sorry...
- How did you get over it? Tris suddenly turned to her. You lost your parents too, right?
- Yeah, I did, but it's a bit more complicated for me. Our relationship was not normal I never grew close to them like you did with yours...
- Oh, yeah. Sorry for bringing it up...Tris gave her a quick smile and stood up. I should get back to washing.
And without another word, she walked away under the rain, leaving Alice even sorrier than before.
As the air got colder, Alice entered the cafeteria under the large glass dome. She took something to eat and took a seat a her group's table after Tris waved to her to join them. Caleb, Four and Peter were there too. Peter was giving her a condescending look, but for him it was a permanent face, so she ignored him.
She didn't pay much attention to the conversation. She was starving and the incessant bickering between Tris and Peter was not that interesting. But their tone of voice was getting more aggressive by the second, Alice was getting nervous that their agitation was going to attract other's attention. She was about to say something but then, the table got thrown away from under her.
She didn't even had time to catch her plate. It fell to the ground with everything else the others were eating. What the hell just happened ? But she immediately realized what caused this: Tris and Peter were fighting, brandishing their butter knives, lunging at each other with force. The amity people around them were watching with apprehension the two young people wanting to rip at each other's throat.
Alice just sat on her bench, fork still in her hand. She suddenly felt really tired. This was really not what they agreed on with Johanna. Caleb also stood not knowing what to do and Four tried to separate them but without success.
Alice stayed put on the bench. There was no point in getting involved, she could already see Johanna marching towards them with very greatly contained anger. Alice was almost impressed.
"Stop it everyone!" She said with authority.
As soon as she said that, both young people calmed down. Tris's eyes were still burning with rage and Peter's cocky smile had not worn off, still.
"In my office. All of you"
And that's how they came back to square one, in Johanna's office at the exact same place as when they entered it the first time. Alice let herself fall to the couch.
"I had one main condition. But it seems like you are having trouble respecting it.
-We're sorry, it won't happen again...tried Four.
- It better don't.
Johanna let out a deep sigh.
- The situation is more tense with each day. I don't know what Erudite is planning, but they are gathering their forces. It is primordial for Amity to stay out of the conflict. In the same way that you have to stay out of it.
- Well some of us are making more efforts than others...Alice whispered, but she was almost sure that Four heard her, as he gave her a side glance.
- I am giving one last chance, continued Johanna. One last chance to prove to me that you can go past your grievances and forgive each other and most importantly, yourselves.
Alice almost snorted, but she thanked herself for being so good at controlling herself. Forgiveness...This was almost funny. There was no forgiveness for anyone in this world, especially her, especially those who wanted to hurt her or other people.
Johanna was about to continue but a strange noise cut her off. Alice straightened herself in her seat. I was the very characteristic sound of vehicles coming closer at full speed. It wasn't long until they completely stopped, replaced by the sound of feet stomping the ground, multiple people, most likely armed.
This wasn't good.
"Stay here, don't make a sound" Said Johanna and went down the stairs.
They all stood frozen in place. Only Alice dared to stand up and inch very carefully towards the railing. Under the office were the stables, a few horses inside of them. Voices could be heard, faint but growing, covered mostly by the animals and the sound of people marching all around the building.
The shadow of three people grew longer as they approached. Alice felt a light tap on her shoulder. Four was looking at her, asking with his eyes what she was seeing. She made a swift motion with her hands: there was nothing for the moment. Two of the shadows walked away, Johanna and another person. There was only one person left. And he was coming closer.
Alice pushed lightly the air down with her hand, signaling to the others to be silent. The shadow became more solide, it came closer and closer, heavy footsteps accompanying it...
Her heart jumped in her chest. She immediately recognized the solid figure of Eric in his black uniform. He was slowly walking in the stables towards one of the horses, a beautiful white mare. He raised his arm towards her nose, gently touching it. Alice's eyes were incapable of leaving him, she should have gone out of sight, she should have been careful...But there was nothing be careful about, it was him, it was Eric.
Eric raised his gaze. He probably felt that someone was observing him. They locked eyes and for a second everything was calm. The light was just perfect, warm and comforting. His grey eyes gleamed in recognition and his features softened.
But this moment didn't last.
"THEY'RE HERE! OVER HERE!" A loud voice screamed just next to Alice. The next moment, she felt a violent push in her back. She lost balance, her arms flailing around, not being able to find good footing. She felt the railing in her side, she felt being pulled by gravity towards the ground. She closed her eyes.
The shock of the fall was far lesser than she expected, but it still hurt a lot. Her back was in agony, she couldn't even breath. She opened her eyes and saw what had saved her. Eric had lunged forward catching her and cushioning the best he could her fall with his arms.
"Just take a deep breath. I'm gonna kill that bastard...
- It's okay, she said between gasps for air. The railing was not that high...Thank you.
Eric finally looked down at her. Now that she was closer she could distinguish better his features: his hair had grown, he hadn't shaved in a bit and his traits were tired, his face has lost its colors. Her heart ached for him.
He looked around quickly, making sure no one was there, then pulled Alice into a tight embrace. The young woman let herself melt into the hug, between his arms. He buried his face into the crook of her neck.
Both of them knew this couldn't last.
With regret, they separated and stood up:
"Go join the others. I'll have to run after you, but I'll give you a head start.
- Take care of yourself, Eric.
- I'll find you soon, I promise. Now, run!"
With a last look to Eric, Alice turned away and ran out of the stables. She could see the others a bit farther and accelerated to try to catch up with them.
She was almost there when she heard bullets flying above her head. Shit. She didn't turn back but she could hear all the people running after them. And she didn't even have a gun.
The railroad was coming into view. Tris got on one knee, shooting to cover the others. Four had finally seen that Alice was there and threw her a weapon. Alice ran a few feet more. She saw the incoming train, they just had to hold on for a little bit...
She got on one knee and screamed "COVER!" for Tris, who stood up and ran, and she herself shot at the soldiers. As he had said Eric was in the front of the Dauntless soldiers. She made sure to avoid shooting in his direction at all cost, aiming instead at the least covered men, into their arms, their legs...
"COVER!"
Alice stood up and ran again, passed the shooting Four and got on the other side of the railway. The train was almost there. Four was the last, he sprinted and jumped, just in time for the train to pass behind him. They were finally in cover.
But it wasn't over. They ran along the marching train, Tris jumped first. She opened one of the doors and held out her hand first for Caleb, then Alice. Once everyone was inside, Alice finally let herself breath. They made it out. But the sinking bad feeling wasn't gone. It was still gripping at her stomach: nothing had changed, they were still on the run. And Eric didn't look good.
They stayed in silence on the train's floor, catching their breath, trying to recollect themselves. At least no one was hurt.
"Now what? Caleb finally asked.
- Now you tell us what you are doing here."
The voice was unknown. Alice turned around but she was immediately tackled by two people and thrown to the ground. She tried to escape, to no avail. Instead she kicked her knee into one of the people's side, making him scream in pain. With one arm free, she punched the other man on the ear multiple times, until he let her go. She could then stand up, fists in front of her face. The others were all also trying to fight two or more people. Someone jumped on Alice from behind, taking her arms and locking them behind her back, twisting them.
The fight was short. Soon everyone in the group was held down. One of the attackers, a tall bald man stood in the middle of the wagon and looked at each of the prisoners.
"None of you have any real value, he sighed with false regret. And it looks like you are wanted by Erudite, so keeping you would too much trouble. Slice their throat, he said to his people.
Alice suddenly felt the cold surface of a knife, the sharp side pressed against her skin, she wanted to cry out, scream, but there was nothing to do, to say...
"Wait! Wait! Four cried out. I am Tobias Eaton!
- What? Wait! The bald man turned to him. Say that again!
- I am Tobias Eaton. And if I'm correct, your leader won't be happy to hear that you killed me and my friends.
The man stood in silence, considering Four's words. Alice didn't even care that what he was saying made no sense, she just wanted the knife away from her neck as soon as possible.
- Then we'll see very soon if what you're saying is true, the bald man finally said. Let them go!"
Alice took a sharp breath when the pressure was gone from her neck and her arms. She was finally free. Well free was not really true, she had been let go, but she was still a prisoner, the attackers not leaving their side. The fugitive groupe exchanged glances, making sure everyone was alright. Alice saw how Tris tried to pry Four with her eyes, wanting to understand what the hell he had said.
Alice didn't really care at the moment. It got them out of trouble for the moment. It was good enough. She thought back with nostalgia to the garden in amity and the meal she didn't get to finish. It would have been so great if everyone could have just...chilled.
i hope to god this isnt a dead fandom, but this is one of my Divergent OCs, Ezra. yes, she’s a lesbian, how could you tell? Ezra is the main character and narrator of one of my AO3 stories, Not My Conscience, a canon-compliant prequel to the Divergent book. give it a read maybe? <3
Going back into the divergent fandom, I've noticed that in Wattpad fan fiction (I only have read divergent fan fiction on Wattpad, because when I was first in the divergent fandom, 12-13, I only used Wattpad and haven't researched this further across platforms yet), writers tend to put Lynn with Peter. On her wiki page it lists her as a lesbian character, but people can read into her sexuality as any wlw identity they feel is right because it isn't explicitly stated in the books/films.
like, why??? she's the only cannon wlw character (or any kind of LGBTQ+) why would you put her with Peter the douchebag
I understand her being read as bi/pan, and giving her a male love interest, but PETER???
All information I can find on her wiki page, almost nothing mentions Peter (only that she mentions Tris is probably better than him in the first movie when they are discussing initiation rank)
Also, this isn't me hating on people for shipping/writing her with men or anything (bi/pan characters and especially women are far less represented than they should be and in most cases misrepresented or unlabeled which is a pussy ass move tbh, and I try to push for as many bi/pan characters in my own writing because of this), just with Peter. This is and always will be a Peter Hayes hate page.
