As promised here is my list of Covey-inspired names.

I tried to follow the typical naming convention of the first part of the name being a traditional folk poem or ballad, but I did add some names that differed from the typical names, and still fit the covey vibes. Suggestions appreciated :)

pls spare me if I get anything wrong, I know a lot about Hispanic culture due to growing up around it, but at the end of the day, I’m white as fuck

Since 10 is located in modern day Texas and Mexico, things are heavily influenced by Hispanic culture, specifically that of Chihuahua. Rarámuri and Yaqui influences, although the majority would be mixed Mexican and Indigenous.

Landscape would be mostly dry grasslands and ranching plains where most people work, covered in drought-resistant flora like mesquites, yucca, sotol, and ocotillo. Nopaleras (prickly pear groves) —but not cartoonish cactus landscapes, they’re just sort of scattered around. Where I live, it’s very common to see cacti in seemingly random locations, and I live on the outskirts of a large city-

I think it would be fairly “common” to see animals that aren’t considered livestock. Most frequent sightings include coyotes, though the species’ population is relatively low/declining. These coyotes typically try and attack the livestock, which leads to a lot of problems within the district. The Capitol pays no mind to the outlying animals, so the district citizens are left to deal with them alone (kids like to scare them off)

^^ because of this situation, I headcanon that D10 calls the Careers something like “Coyotes” because they view their own kids as precious, lamb-like innocence, deserving of life, and the Coyotes try to take that. (Maybe they even refer to Capitolites as Coyotes…) (also I saw a coyote one day and was like wait this is so d10 core #visionary)

Speaking of animals, I HIGHLY believe that the most common bird species is the roadrunner. It’s possible that deer (white-tailed deer, specific for the area) roam around casually, but probably keep their distance from the district folk, keeping more towards the mountains/surrounding landscape. If you go far enough outside the district, like more towards where the fencing would be, you’d probably see a deer. Kids like to go out and watch them, but it’s considered a risky activity (not that anyone really cares; deers are beautiful and worth the risk).

Religion in the districts is a bit of a hard topic, but I love to think about it. I fully believe that bits of Christianity survived far into Panem, especially Districts like 4, 10, 11, and 12. This came to my attention when Lucy Gray sang The Old Therebefore, which contains a lyric about heaven. It’s a funeral song, and the hereafter is how they view their afterlife. As in the 74th Games, I don’t see it mentioned, but I don’t think Katniss would have much care for myths like that.

So! I think that D10 still holds some Christian beliefs and customs, since Christianity is such a huge part of so many people’s lives in Mexico (and here in Texas). They celebrate their own sort of Day of the Dead, specifically honoring those who passed in the Games and to the cruelty of the Capitol. It’s a very special day to so many. Ofrendas still exist, but are probably smaller and less elaborate. They typically take up some space in the person’s home, or at the deceased’s grave.

^^ food items aren’t used since food is so scarce and important for life, but the person’s favorite things are placed on the ofrenda (stuffed animal, trinkets, etc.) I don’t think cameras exist among district folk, so photos are less common. However, if the person was in the Games, a photograph of them is given to the family, which can be used for the ofrenda.

(I have a lot to say on religion in Panem, so maybe I’ll make a separate post about that)

Typical meals include dried meat, queso asadero, and flour tortillas. Handmade embroidered cloths called servilletas de bordada/ servilletas artesanales/ tortilleras bordadas (there’s a few different terms but all roughly mean the same thing). They’re typically used to cover tortillas.

The use of colorful skirts, tops, and dresses. Much like Lucy Gray and the Covey, the citizens of D10 lost this sense of identity over time, and now these dresses are usually saved for special occasions only, like the Reaping, or weddings. However, rebozos are used in every day life, used by women to cover their head and/or upper body from the sun. Quezquémetl are typically used for bigger events, but can be worn everyday. In the pre-Hispanic period, only women of higher rank wore the quezquémetl, so I thought I’d bring that back. They’re usually worn by the Mayor’s daughters/wife.

Textile art, basketry, or pottery with geometric patterns. Kind of like this

Much like D12, 10 would have their own sort of regional differences. Accent/dialect, dances, music, and others. Music is a huge part of Mexico’s culture, so I think it’s fair to have some music integrated into D10’s culture itself. I don’t think they’d have a Covey, or any Covey roots, since Lucy Gray’s fam was the last traveling Covey I believe? So Covey is strictly D12 in my opinion. D10 has a few dances inspired Mexican ballet folk dance, or folklorico. It’s typically done during celebrations like weddings, but the district loves to dance, even if they don’t get to do it often.

As for names, some citizens have two surnames, like modern Hispanic families do. It’s typically done to honor the family name or just a family member (e.g., Lambert-Briley). Though, the Capitol typically chooses to ignore their second name, kind of like how they ignored the “Gray” in Lucy Gray’s name. Even on their slips for the Reaping, it only contains the first family name (e.g., Lambert). People are usually defensive about it, especially in the Capitol. “My name is [name] Lambert-Briley, not just Lambert.” Y’know? Identity is very important to them

There are common sayings or expressions in Spanish. It wouldn’t be known as an actual language, it would just classify as “lingo.” Mostly just swear words, though, because I feel like that’d be very realistic and kind of funny. It’s very common among family members and neighbors to meet up and sort of talk with this speech. However, citizens usually try and refrain from speaking Spanish in front of Peacekeepers.

Smaller headcanons:

citizens of D10 drink and smoke a lot. It’s common for teens to do it too.

nicknames are given to almost everyone. This is very prominent in my fic, but we ain’t here to talk about that.

community is very strong between the district.

if you work in the same profession, it’s likely you’re close with who you’re working with, especially if you’re a abattoir/butcher and are stuck in the same building all day.

kids can be particularly violent, as they’ve been desensitized to killing at a young age.

mostly men work in the slaughterhouse

seasons barely exist. It’s hot all year round and hardly ever rains. I’m bitchy about this bc it’s exactly like that were I live too

it can get cold in February, but never enough to actually snow

Jobs:

Slaughterhouse/abattoir

livestock animals are killed and processed to provide meat and other byproducts for human use.

Usually small environment, separated into groups of 10, working with 100 animals a day.

Butchers deal with the act of cutting, deboning, dressing, preparing the carcass into retail cuts, which is then sent to the Capitol for consumption after being delivered to the tannery.

Tannery

Processing raw animal hides into finished leather using chemical and mechanical treatments.

Workers may perform tasks such as soaking, fleshing, tanning, dyeing, and finishing leather.

The slaughterhouse gives tanners the skin to work with.

Before tanning, the skins are often dehaired, then have fat, meat and connective tissue removed.

Skins are washed and soaked in water with various compounds, and prepared to receive a tanning agent. They are then stretched, dried, and sometimes smoked.

Husbandry

Deals with the management, production, and care of domestic animals for meat, milk, fiber, or other products.

It includes day-to-day care, management, production, nutrition, selective breeding, and the raising of livestock.

Feeding, watering, monitoring health, providing veterinary care, overseeing breeding, and handling birthing.

Ranches (typically working with cows and sheep)
