The space in between

The design museum holon in israel presents the first large-scale retrospective exhibition of japanese studio nendo. 

The exhibition creates a conceptual village of design objects and installation pieces within the gallery rooms. Visitors walk through a labyrinth of open-top display cases, each providing a window into the creative process of the studio.

More than 70 works are divided into six categories of ‘in between spaces’ — a theme that riffs off nendo’s own methodology of finding ‘gaps’ in existing ideas to be made into new concepts.

Barbie, more than a doll

Barbie is a global icon and in 56 years of life, she has managed to knock down every linguistic, cultural, social, and anthropological barrier. It is for this reason that the Museo delle Culture in Milan has chosen to dedicate an exhibition to her called Barbie. The Icon, curated by Massimiliano Capella.

A Zakkaya in the museum

Approximately half a century ago, while japan was enjoying a long period of rapid economic growth, ‘zakka’ typically referred to things like kettles, brooms, buckets and other utensils, necessary household items. however, now on the shelves of ‘zakkaya’, or ‘miscellaneous goods stores’, shoppers can find a slew of other items.

The exhibition ‘ZAKKA – goods and things’ curated by naoto fukasawa, surveys the particularities and sensibilities of the concept of ‘zakka’, and the environments they occupy, considering the mundane and assorted items as a unique culture of their own. bringing varied sundries together in one space, the show draws attention to the appeal of the design and appearance of ‘zakka’, and how it can be defined.

An exhibition

Recreated by the ICA as part of its Richard Hamilton at the ICA exhibition, an Exhibit (1957) was originally conceived by Hamilton in close collaboration with writer-critic Lawrence Alloway and artist Victor Pasmore for the ICA’s original premises at Dover Street in London. Organised around a modular hanging system, a kit of suspended Perspex panels was devised to be freely configured whilst installing, with the intention of giving visitors opportunity ‘to generate their own compositions’ as they walked through.

Nomadic Dharavic Design Museum

Dharavi is a three-square-kilometer urban village located in the heart of Mumbai. Despite difficult living conditions and a high density population, locals that inhabit this user-generated neighborhood design, manufacture and commercialize all kinds of crafts and goods. Opened in february 2016, the design museum opened its doors. Traveling by pushcart, similar to those used by locals to distribute and sell goods, design museum was set up as a platform for makers to present their products to the community, the city of Mumbai and, in turn, the rest of the world. The main mission of the program is to use design as a tool to promote social change, to create a meeting point for cultural exchange and innovation, and to challenge the negative perception of informal settlements around the world.

In the 2016 edition of the MET’s annually staged fashion exhibition — more than 170 garments are presented in order to challenge preconceived notions about hand and machine-made clothing –temporary alcoves form part of an immersive ‘ghost cathedral’ designed by OMA new york.  They have transformed the atrium of the museum’s robert lehman wing into an almost ethereal space using a perforated white scrim that offers varying degrees of transparency. The dual level intervention hosts a sequence of case studies, where haute couture and ready-to-wear pieces are presented side by side in order to reveal their hand or machine-made characteristics.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is a haute couture wedding dress with a 20-foot train, designed by karl lagerfeld for chanel. Details of its embroidery are projected onto a domed ceiling, while the floor below is a temporary surface designed to increase potential display area. The first floor unfolds as a series of alcoves built around the architecture of the gallery, while the level below is arranged as sequential suite of rooms presented one after the other.

The Fish Pond Song

A video work by Jeroen Kooijmans at the Stedelijk Museum guides visitors through an imaginary world of war, propelled by narratives of fear, dreams and lust. Exhibited in its entirety for the first time, the more than 700-sq-m installation unfolds over three chapters, communicating war as an abstract reality – a lurking evil and psychological madness.

Video projections featured in the spatial installation appear on simple archetypal structures and their surrounding walls – not unlike the set for a contemporary theatre performance. Compared with the voyeuristic distance often offered in a playhouse, The Fish Pond Song allows visitors to immerse themselves fully in the projected landscapes and to more actively engage in their thought-provoking content.

Making Africa. A Continent of Contemporary Design

From March 2015, a major exhibition by the Vitra Design Museum sheds new light on contemporary African design. Showcasing the work of over 120 artists and designers, the exhibition illustrates how design accompanies and fuels economic and political changes on the continent.
