Look what I found outside the village of Akhendachou n’Aït Ouffi! 🇲🇦😺☀️

After riding through mountain passes with no asphalt, villages where children throw rocks at me, where internet has been super spotty all over the region, I see these gigantic solar panels along the dusty land. I’m not saying Morocco shouldn’t have solar panels, but it feels like this is a jump 10 layers of technology from the places I’ve been where there aren’t even sidewalks.

Some rooms I’ve stayed in just have a single lightbulb literally hanging from a hole in the ceiling. It’s just a huge contrast to me and looks and feels out of place.

Hello from Ziz Valley! 🇲🇦⛰️💧😺🏍️

The Ziz River runs through Morocco into Algeria. The source of the river comes from the High Atlas mountains in Morocco and flows south 282 kilometers/ or 175 miles into the Sahara Desert in Algeria. Some of the river runs through rocky dry terrain, but in other areas there are lush palm trees and vegetation where whole villages live near the water source depending on it for survival.

I used the word oasis prior to my moto journey, but never truly grasped what it meant until I came to Morocco. Imagine you are riding through land so arid that no matter how much water you drink, you always feel dehydrated. If a car runs over some dried mud, it kicks up dust and you are soon covered in it and breathe it all in, skin, nose and eyes. But alas, your eyes detect blue. And the contrast of this color against the brown landscape is such a joy to your body. To be able to see color, take in the contrast and comprehend life comes from it is such an interesting deduction process.

Crystal in a Kaftan 💎🇲🇦

A Kaftan is a traditional robe worn all over the world and originates from the ancient Mesopotamia culture. It’s loose, flowy and very light. It can be worn for everyday use or special occasions and can be made of different material such as cotton or silk.

Is this family playing dress up with me or am I embracing the Moroccan culture? I think both! 😺But this is actually way out of my comfort zone. One, it’s not my typical style, and two, I am very conscious against appropriating others cultures. But when 5+ women of the family plus friends they have over push you to wear it, I think they’re okay with me trying on this gorgeous outfit. Also, the red waist textile is specific to the North of Morocco.

Hello from the Medina in Chefchaouen, Morocco! 🇲🇦

Located in the Northwest of Morocco in the Rif Mountains, this town is also known as The Blue Pearl. And I think you can see why 😺 The buildings in this town are painted all different shades of blue and give the town a unique look, especially cast upon the surrounding mountain landscape

It feels so nice to move slow. Initially I was just going to spend a few hours here and keep moving to Fes. But I decided to spend a few nights. I have to break out of my rushing/ constant moving habit. Move slow, Crystal. US Citizens get 90 days in Morocco, we have time. So here I am dressed and exploring like a regular human. The alleys and corridors are not straight and are one huge confusing maze, but it’s actually quite fun. I’ve gotten lost a few times, but it’s really safe here. No hijab, no one harassing me. Just some shop keepers asking if I’d like to look at their merchandise. One polite decline and they leave me alone.
