Part 2 of who the hell knows
|1974|
Four sets of footsteps echoed throughout the backrooms. Four voices mingled and whined and yapped together as well.
“Fred, I’m hungry.”
“Well there’s not really anything we can do about that right now, darling.”
“But what if we starve to death?”
“John, do you have anything remotely helpful to say?”
“I’m just saying!” Deaky held his hands up defensively. “There’s a lot of things that can happen before we ever make it out. If we make it out.”
Roger turned around to glare at Deaky. “Could you be any more depressing?”
“Probably.”
“You have to think positive, Deaky!” Freddie was clearly determined to be the ray of sunshine in this situation.
“I’ll think positive when we finally get out of here. Or when I’m dead.”
“That could happen,” Roger stated, “and not because of an entity.”
“Hey, no threats,” Brian said.
“Sorry, I don’t take orders from poodles.”
“You’ve been insulting my hair for the past five years now. Get some new material, for heavens sakes.”
“No.”
“Guys, what was that noise?”
“Ignore it, Deaky,” Freddie said gently. “Just keep quiet.”
“YAACHOO!”
“DAMMIT ROGER!”
“I’M SORRY! IT’S ALLERGY SEASON!”
“Hey, everybody shut up,” Brian said suddenly.
“Why?” three voices asked at once.
“That room’s different.” Brian pointed to a wall that had a small painting on it, half hidden by the doorway it was next to.
“That can’t be good,” Deaky said, just as Freddie exclaimed, “FAB!”. Roger remained neutral on the matter.
“Maybe we’ll finally get somewhere,” Brian remarked, already advancing towards the doorway.
“Or maybe it’s a trap,” John stated flatly.
Freddie sighed. “Anything could be a trap, Deaky. That’s why we just have to go with it.”
Deaky seemed to reluctantly agree with this, so he followed the others into this strange room.
The strange room, they discovered, was not bare and empty but was in fact, an odd version of a kitchen. A table with four chairs sat in the middle, and off to the side were the standard cabinets and cupboards but some of them were the wrong size, some didn’t have any handles, and others were shaped weirdly. The fridge, tucked away in the corner, appeared to be relatively normal but it was still off-putting. The constant buzzing of the fluorescent lights only added to the unnerving feeling.
Queen stood there in confused and slightly frightened silence, trying to make sense of the scene before them. Roger reached out and touched the closest chair, trying to ground himself.
“This feels like the kitchen in our flat,” the drummer said. “Y’know?” He spun in a slow circle. “It—I can’t explain it but it feels familiar, in the strangest way.”
Freddie blinked and tilted his head before studying the room once more. “You might be right, Rog.”
“First time he’s ever heard that,” Brian commented.
Roger stuck his tongue out at the poodle, while Deaky wandered over to the cabinets and started trying to pry them open. They all seemed to be stuck, or perhaps they were locked, or maybe it was just a trick of the Backrooms. Freddie joined Deaky in his attempt to open the cupboards and reached up to one above his head. Standing on his tiptoes he was able to swing it open with little difficulty.
Deaky glanced over in surprise. “You got one?”
“I did, yes,” Freddie said. “Brian, darling, would you be so kind as to take a peek in here?”
Brian, the human tree, the mostly compliant human tree, was now staring at Freddie like he’d grown a third head. “Are you insane?”
“What? No?” Freddie didn’t know what else to say, since he’d fully expected Brian to oblige without complaint.
“Do you really think I’m going to put my hand up in there?!”
Freddie blinked. “I mean… I did.”
“Are you crazy?! Who knows what could be hiding up there?”
“It’s just a cupboard, Brian!” Roger interjected.
“Yes but this entire place is also a DEATH TRAP!”
John whimpered.
Brian continued, “And we don’t have a clue what’s safe and what isn’t!”
“Well, this cupboard must be important if we’re able to open it,” Freddie said, crossing his arms. “If you won’t take a look, then I’ll just have Roger lift me.”
Roger sputtered.
“Fine, fine, I’ll look,” Brian conceded with a sigh.
“Hurray!” Freddie clapped his hands gleefully.
“But only because I don’t trust you and Roger not to injure each other somehow, and that’s the last thing we need.”
“Oh c’mon, Bri, we don’t get hurt that often,” Roger protested.
John snorted. “What about when you and Fred tried changing the bathroom lightbulb by yourselves instead of waiting for Brian? You got concussed and Freddie broke his nose!”
“My pride was greatly wounded as well.” The singer gave a dramatic sniff.
Rolling his eyes, Brian stepped up to the cupboard and stood on his toes before reaching inside. His fingers brushed against something round and cold. Startled but mostly certain he wasn’t going die from this, he closed his fingers around the object and pulled it out of the cupboard. The thing dinged and clanged as he did so, and the four boys realized it was a small bell.
“Oh,” they said simultaneously.
“It’s… just a bell.” Freddie couldn’t hide his disappointment.
“Well, maybe it does something cool,” Roger said.
Brian studied it carefully, turning it over in his hand before grasping it by the string and shaking it vigorously.
The bell rang out through the kitchen loudly and melodiously. When the sound finally died down, the silence felt much more eerie.
Then, they heard something.
Footsteps.
Slow, quiet ones that were steadily growing louder.
“Oh no,” Deaky whispered.
Queen clung to each other in the middle of the room, watching the doorway with wide and fearful eyes as the footsteps got closer and closer. A shadow fell across the floor. A moment later, the shadow’s owner stepped fully into the room, blinking at them.
Silence.
Then, “… Miami?!”
