possibly controversial disability community opinion: long-term caregivers should be considered somewhat part of the disability community and i'm kind of tired of excluding caregivers from discussions about ableism and systemic issues when caregivers also get the short end of the stick right alongside us every. single. time.
"some caregivers are ableist and caregiving doesn't inherently make you a good person" and "caregivers are regularly affected by ableism and systemic issues" are two things that are both true.
Today I learned that where I live (Queensland, Australia,) disability support workers are expected to work with clients who have COVID and other contagious diseases WITHOUT PPE. Not even a mask is provided or required.
They are ALSO expected to WORK WITH CLIENTS if they themselves have COVID or other contagious diseases. Also with no PPE, not even a mask, provided or required.
Disability support workers are generally casual. No sick days, not even for COVID, not even if their work is why they got sick in the first place.
My disability support worker has had COVID 6-7 times. She refuses to work while sick during the contagious period - which her company does not like her doing and her income is heavily impacted by this - but has worked with broken bones and the like.
Personally I would fire my disability support company in a moment if someone with COVID showed up at my door. It's fucked up that the good support workers, the working class people, have to suffer the consequences of having integrity that their companies and the industry do not have. By refusing to kill their clients by bringing COVID to their homes.
NDIS, disability support in general, and infection control are completely failing both the workers and the disabled people in this scenario, and I didn't even know about this until today.

BRITISH DISABLED LESBIAN IS TERRIFIED OF POTENTIAL DISABILITY CUTS
unusual serious post from us. our bad gang.
if you aren't aware, the british government is trying very hard - despite resistance from hundreds of members of parliament and thousands of citizens - to get a bill into law harshly cutting disability benefits. i am living off of these benefits and, despite recent concessions, do not trust the government to leave my payments untouched.
due to this, i have somewhat reluctantly opened a ko-fi account for people to donate to if they are able. you can donate as little as £1, i just hope for a slight bit of financial stability that i cannot trust my government to provide. if you choose to donate, i cannot thank you enough.

Dealing with my chronic illness has easily been the most difficult and almost completely isolating thing I’ve ever dealt with in my entire life.
That is to say: If you have someone struggling with an illness that may keep them at home all the time for their safety or in the hospital constantly for treatments, check on them please, send them a text, even if you don’t think it will do anything, i guarantee they will appreciate even the thought of you considering their existence.
because when you’re this sick you really do kinda disappear sometimes, and even as an extreme introvert myself, humans need each-other wether we like it or not.
URGENT: Every little bit helps ( A Writer & Poet from Ghazza)
My name is Farah, and my nickname is "Joy." I'm a 23 year-old writer from Gaza, currently studying English Literature at the Islamic University of Gaza, which has sadly been bombed. I've lived most of my life through war, enduring five conflicts that have stolen my right to live in safety, peace, and love.
my book
I write stories, reflections, and poems. Since I was young, I've been passionate about poetry and literature, and I also enjoy simple crochet, which helps me distract myself from the tragedies I experience. Recently, I started my biggest project yet: writing a book documenting everything I've lived through during the genocide, it’s name “ by my pen “
The ceasefire have ceased, but the devastation remains. We have found ourselves stripped of everything: our warm family home, our employment, our work, and our offices.
In the midst of this overwhelming loss, I began to find solace and a voice in poetry, drawing inspiration from the tents that surround us and the profound, daily suffering we endure.
Every morning, I wake up to the sight of destruction, my gaze immediately falling upon the endless sprawl of displacement tents. We managed to rent this damaged apartment—it is no substitute for the home we lost, yet we are grateful that it offers us a fragile shelter, keeping us from sleeping completely out in the open.
I currently live with my mother and four siblings in a shelter, seeking refuge from the constant threat of death due to the violent airstrikes shaking the ground around me. As my mother's eldest daughter, her close friend, and her supporter (just as she supports me), we decided to launch this campaign to raise funds for our basic needs during this brutal war that's ravaging our weary bodies. My father hasn't been with us since we were young; we've always been under our mother's care. I've lost my beautiful, warm home. I've been displaced to over 17 different shelters and locations, each one worse than the last due to the lack of any safe place to go. We face countless struggles, most notably the starvation we endure as part of the siege and strangulation, designed to create a complete cycle of Nazi-like genocide against us.
Every donation you make reaches me directly in Gaza, thanks to my friend who faithfully sends them. I use these funds to buy flour and the scarce food available, which is sold at exorbitant prices due to the continuous starvation and limited resources compared to the number of Gazans. Additionally, I'm raising money for my family and me to escape this suffering as quickly as possible and at the earliest opportunity, to start our lives anew and begin our complete healing.
