I’m very wary of pushing for using gene editing on conditions because we shouldn’t attempt to wipe out certain types of people because we perceive it as flawed or a disability. Because that is quite literally eugenics.
For example they can do it for some forms of hereditary blindness, but should we not instead focus on making the world more accepting of Blind people and more accessible? I’m not blind so I’m curious; do blind people consider their community a separate culture as Deaf people do? And this gene editing thing reminds me of how few Deaf people like cochlear implants because to ‘cure’ all Deaf people would be to completely erase an entire culture, which is definitionally genocide. And they have tried before, by trying to force Deaf people to speak in a voice and lip read and forbidding sign languages.
We need to accept that some people will always have disabilities and complex or otherwise medical conditions, which require differing levels of support. We need to make the world more accepting and accessible and we need support for all the varying levels and types of disability. Do not try to force gene editing. Disability does not need a solution (I wonder who else uses that word… solution).
