An important anarchist criticism of Marxism in the twenties was that in its urge to establish a center to history, either in the proletariat or in its 'representative,' the Communist party, Marxism reproduced the very power structures that in theory it rejected.... Similarly, an unwavering commitment to modernism (a unilinear view of history and its material basis in industrial and technological progress), which is characteristic of mainstream Marxism and most certainly of existing socialist states, makes for a blindness to contemporary questions related to ecology, community, and alienation, which may no longer be blamed simply on capitalism, but are products of a modern culture of which Marxism partakes.
