The macro captures what stills can't quite show β the emerald saturation shifts subtly as the prismatic crystal faces catch and release light from different angles. The tan host matrix frames the green rather than competing with it, which is the Mindouli locality character that makes this material recognizable. Specimen from My Mineral Box.
Dioptase from Congo, on the iconic tan host matrix. The emerald color you're seeing isn't a treatment or a coincidence β it comes from copper cyclosilicate chemistry. CuΒ²βΊ ions sit in 6-fold coordination with silicate, absorbing wavelengths in a way that produces this specific deep saturated green. Same CuΒ²βΊ ion as malachite, but in a different crystal environment, hence a very different green. Most dealer-grade Congo dioptase originates in the Mindouli area, where the host rock is the honey-colored matrix you see here. Dioptase is one of the few minerals that holds its own against emerald on pure color saturation β and unlike emerald, it'll do this for under a hundred dollars on a good matrix piece. It's a copper cyclosilicate (CuβSiβOββΒ·6HβO), which means the hexagonal rings of silica tetrahedra trap copper ions in the structure, and copper is what gives it that electric green. The catch: dioptase is soft (5 Mohs) and cleaves in three directions, so it breaks easily. Never faceted into jewelry for that reason. Classic locality is Kazakhstan, but Congo (shown here) and Namibia produce some of the brightest modern material.
